Last spring I had a player walk away from volleyball because she burnt out and wasn’t happy anymore. I saw that student yesterday; she gave me a big hug, we chatted, she’s crushing life and excited to graduate. Sometimes it’s bigger than sports. #MentalHealthMatters
So are we just not going to talk about the teacher who got shot by a 6 year old student? Are we just gonna pretend like this isn’t happening in public education? In the hospital with life threatening injuries…are we going to tell her to “remember her why” after this? Horrific.
COACHES: Be sure that you care more about the "person" than you care about the "player". Be more concerned about who they are than just about how they perform.
You can give great effort. You can have a great attitude. You can bring your best daily. Things still may not go your way. Outcomes are out of your control. This is life.
Still bring great effort, have a great attitude, bring your best daily.
How you show up is a choice.
You won’t always feel like it.
You won’t always enjoy it.
It won’t always be easy.
It won’t always be convenient.
You won’t always be confident.
You won’t always have the answers.
It won’t always be comfortable.
It won’t always be perfect.
Show up anyway. Live the standard.
Leaders don’t pick & choose when to show up, when to compete or when to conquer. Leadership doesn’t rest. The best are always hungry, never satisfied. They have a dog mentality that says, “Don’t just take part. Take over!” It’s not enough to meet the standard. Be the standard!”
Talking, high fives, fist bumps, sprinting to help your teammate off the floor, pointing to them after a good pass, positive involvement from the bench. This is what great programs are built on! Uplift teammates & be an energy giver to your team! It equals TEAM & PROGRAM success!
Student-athletes: Say “thank you” constantly. Thank bus drivers, food service workers, administrators, your parents, teachers, etc. You’ve worked hard but it has also taken the effort of an entire village to help get you where you are. Don’t be entitled. Instead, be grateful.
Want to hear something amazing about crying?
Emotional tears have higher protein concentration than irritant tears, which makes them fall down your cheeks more slowly—increasing the chance they’ll be seen and solicit care.
In literal ways, your body is built for community.
Failure is a big part of your path to success. It’s not your enemy. It is your partner in growth. It doesn’t define you; it refines you. If you didn’t fail, you wouldn’t build the character you need to succeed. Failure is an event, not a definition.
