#Beets may help lower blood pressure, improve cognitive function, and decrease inflammation. These benefits may be useful for those with #ckd. If you have a history of high blood potassium or hyperkalemia, opt for 1/2 cup of canned, low salt beets instead of fresh beets.
The #microbiome can affect #nutrient absorption, #food#digestion, mood, body weight, and illness prevention. #Fermented foods & drinks, yogurt, fiber-rich fruits + veggies, whole grains, garlic can improve the microbiome and your #health. #ckd https://t.co/fdm89gm2Vj
Confused about the renal diet? You're not alone. In my new blog series called 'You've Got to Be Kidney Me!' I hope to clear up the confusion by unpacking some of the myths & misconceptions that exist about the renal diet. Link to 1st article here:https://t.co/VJnW8GLqHa #renal
Telling CKD patients to limit vegetables and fruits to control fluid intake sends the wrong message. Most do not eat enough F&V to begin with and F&V help CKD patients with #acidosis, #guthealth and #hearthealth. Tell patients to limit sodium and fluids, not healthy food!
@drharshaljoshi@sjoshimd @CJASN Good question, and one I usually leave up to the doctor who I think should individualize based on the patient. A change in diet or drop in GFR warrants closer monitoring
@drharshaljoshi@sjoshimd @CJASN I think the key word here is 'sometimes.' Clinical practice guidelines only recommend restricting potassium intake if serum levels are high.
@sjoshimd @CJASN Many CKD patients are under the false impression that potassium restriction will slow disease progression. We need to get the message across to patients that potassium is only an issue if the kidneys cannot filter it properly-it doesn’t damage the kidneys, it helps them!
Another @CJASN editorial on how increased dietary K+ (measured usually through urinary K+ excretion) has been now been associated in 4 studies with reduced CKD progression/mortality.
Another reason to embrace fruits & veggies instead of avoiding in CKD..

When it comes to kidney disease, some supplements are helpful and some are harmful. It's important to work with a provider who knows the difference! #kidneydisease#renaldietitian#supplements https://t.co/NZjlgFVr8o
“Carbs” are not a food group. Like fats and protein, carbs are a macronutrient that can be found in healthful as well as unhealthful foods. It’s more meaningful to speak in terms of foods, not macronutrients.
Going plant-based is not the same as going vegan. Eating more plants and less animal foods just makes sense for kidney disease. Check out my article about things to consider when starting a plant-based diet to treat CKD #renaldiet#CKD#nutrition https://t.co/I6U5YyC6hh
The last tip is my favorite, know your numbers! Your lab results can help you and your #renaldietitian determine how strict your diet needs to be. An individualized approach to #renal nutrition is best!
