Pro-US/Pro-Multipolarity. Seeks world where nations preserve traditions & share knowledge to advance humanity. Woke ideology is performative neoliberalism.
1. Speaking purely for US interests, one of the most irresponsible failures in wargaming against China in a battle to de jure create an independent Taiwan is the total absence in monitoring warfighting sentiments amongst the Chinese public. A thread:
@RnaudBertrand What stands out for my ears on the two Uyghur songs shared in this thread is that traditional rhythms match the popular Reggaeton "dembow" beats now ubiquitous in Latin music. https://t.co/3odnDsm09K
AIT under Greene's leadership has performed a master class in diplomatic malpractice, where the US diplomat himself has become the story, rather than serve as @WhiteHouse reliable messenger. In the past 1.5 years every AIT statement echoes precisely partisan DPP talking points.

"An editorial published on the 27th by Taiwan’s 'China Times' noted that during his visit to China this year, Donald Trump stated he did not wish to see Taiwan move toward "independence." Yet, Raymond Greene [the US diplomat heading the American Institute in Taiwan--AIT] has now largely embraced the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) "theory of non-subordination," drifting increasingly far from Trump's stance. It can be inferred that Greene lacks any genuine desire to foster cross-strait dialogue; instead, he has effectively become a cheerleader for the Lai administration, with the "real objective being to unilaterally set preconditions for cross-strait interactions." The editorial argued that Greene’s use of "70 percent public opinion" to endorse the DPP's cross-strait policy—while subtly reframing it as "70 percent of the public agreeing with the DPP's cross-strait line"—completely contradicts the facts and is destined to be repudiated by the people through the ballot box. The article asserted that the resumption of exchanges and the enhancement of mutual trust across the Strait represent the greatest consensus among the 23 million residents of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu—transcending party lines, counties, and industries—and that they "need not be defined by the U.S., nor should they allow a U.S. official stationed in Taiwan to steer the narrative."" @brianhioe THIS! Anyone who has experience interacting with PRC govt officials and diplomats know they lack creativity, largely because there's little upside in trying something unorthodox/innovative. Also DPP/West too eager to label anything that's basic public diplomacy as United Front.
@lukedepulford We Westerners have GOT to turn every geopolitical lesson back to Hitler and Neville Chamberlain.
Counterpoint: Peace through verbal provocation (as the DPP excels at by downplaying its TW's Chines-ness while celebrating everything colonial Japan) will eventually deliver war.
@GrayConnolly The other major blindspot is how Westerners project some type of badass warrior spirit to the TW military, a monolith of some type of resilient national spirit. Have you seen how divided TW society is right now under DPP? Plus it's long been known ROC military brass leans KMT.
@GrayConnolly Thus Western wargames that show a US/TW victory, albeit with heavy losses, when China withdraws after suffering up to 100K casualties is comical and misunderstands the depth of how China views Taiwan unification as the final, ending chapter of their 100 years of humiliation.
I also find odd how the entire Western cope about how PLA will by stymied by a D-Day style invasion ignores how existential a Taiwan invasion, if it does happen, is existential for the CCP, considering a much weaker PLA suffered up to 900K casualties in Korean War.
China faces a much heavier lift than D-Day in trying to take Taiwan & would face a US-led Coalition that is more advanced, more organised, and has more war experience than the PLA does. This would be so even if Xi was not purging his Admirals & Generals - which he is doing
@vshih2@AsiaSociety@dannyrrussel@orvilleschell On Question 5: If you've followed TW's political landscape casually, the high lever of distrust in DPP's increasing illiberal governance is hardly a CCP psyop but genuine frustration. That's why oppo has tried to stop DPP's patronage/graft network from renewables to military tech
It doesn't matter how many new types of "vital national security interests" the US can compile to justify military support for TW. When your enemy (PRC) is playing for the "vital national IDENTITY" card, we may win some battles but will always lose the war.
Why does Taiwan matter? Semiconductor chips are one obvious reason, but they're not the most important. @eyckfreymann has two more. He explains on the latest episode of Foreign Podicy.

@poland_stan@WashTimesOpEd Take this example of PRC-back narratives in TW. You can denounce it as United Front propaganda, but if you avoid rebutting the actual words/messages then accusations of "cognitive warfare" only resonates in elite academic circles: https://t.co/Rou3hgwAK8
@poland_stan@WashTimesOpEd The challenge for anti-China Westerners is that your DPP allies ARE the woke, victimology-obsessed globalists, and efforts to de-Sinicize TW means buying into the Leftist approach that all elements of civilizational pride (ie Chinese heritage in TW) should be downplayed.
CCP's ability to maintain its one-party rule is not just based on economic growth, but also giving Chinese people the dignity of "standing up" to century of humiliation, with TW its last unfinished task. Thus ending CCP's ruling legitimacy requires TW first to be reunified.
Among KMT/TPP's top messaging failure is that Western academics/media/govt still blindly refer to TW as a model of liberal democracy, but overlook DPP's illiberal reign of partisan judiciary, 绿友友 patronage, silencing media, jailing oppo leaders, & legislative tricks.
Here in #Taiwan, yet another error in the pro-@DPPonline@taipei_times.
Legislator May Chin #高金素梅 who was indicted today, has served as a legislator since 2002, not 2008 as Taipei Times reports.

@SariArhoHavren It'll help now ONLY if the global political economy has changed since 1990s, where the relative national determination/tolerance for pain of the PRC on key issues of Taiwan, tech, Taiwan, trade, Taiwan exceeds that of the West; ie we talk when we no longer have the will to fight.
@Scholars_Stage Agreed. Rare to find TW commentary in English that's not spearheaded by DPP-led/linked outlets, w/Taipei Times and Global Taiwan Institute atop the list. Other DPP-directed groups like Formosan Assc 4 Public Affairs (FAPA) excel at embedding diaspora youth into US policy circles.
There's also the problem of budgetary restraints in TW, where its prized nat'l health care and energy infrastructure are falling apart (the latter due to Tsai-era policies that sent money to unqualified 绿友友 party fundraisers to develop a solar/wind assets that have fallen apart
@Scholars_Stage The impasse on the "special" defense budget, which Lai announced in WaPo last year without any details or consultation with oppo-led parliament, is because of severe breakdown of trust and the DPP's reliance on divisiveness, 绿友友 graft, and illiberal governance to win support.
