keep seeing artists on here dragging others' work

comparing their impetus/motivation/technique/subject matter etc and implying or boldly stating theirs is better

but why? 😅 I think it's obvious, but I see adults doing this sorta frequently, so throwing it out to see how others view this behavior

my take? I usually think the poster in question is working through some insecurity in their work.

I think the work they're pointing out in a negative light has sparked envy/jealousy in them and they haven't figured out that these emotions are not "bad" but your reaction to them can be

that envy/jealousy can push you to better yourself and your work and that's how to direct these feelings

so maybe you don't like or understand a piece, think it's technically easy to create, and it sells for a lot, more than you sell for, and you're jealous but can't face it. dissing that work won't devalue it to those who appreciate it, and it won't make yours sell for more. it will probably cause folks to see your insecurity and throw some pity your way tho

or you see someone and you know deep down they have a better technical mastery of a media you love and have dedicated years to. and you feel dread. so do you actually think trying to pick apart the obviously superb work will make others not see the greatness anymore? or that with words alone you can convince others to view your work as "superior" in comparison, when deep down you don't even believe that?

no one is immune to jealousy or the thief of joy, but you grow faster when you own up to feeling it and realign your goals for growth toward what is *actually* inspiring you

I love having friends whose work provokes these feelings of jealousy within me

because I respect their talent and mind and actions. because I think they're great. because they inspire me. and because when an artist whose work I so genuinely admire like that casts a loving glance my way, their compliments matter because they come from a practice of substance
