Asian Americans face a higher risk of type 2 diabetes & heart disease at lower BMIs (due to different fat distribution). In 2004, the WHO suggested making obesity ≥27.5 kg/m² for Asians to address these risks.

But 4.75 billion people — over half of the world's population — lives in Asia, with vast within-group diversity. So does one BMI threshold really fit all?

For example, in one of the most extensive analyses examining BMI cutoffs (~1.5 million people in the UK), researchers found that obesity thresholds should be 23.9 in South Asian, 26.6 in Arab, 26.9 in Chinese, and 28.1 in Black populations — versus 30 for Whites.
