　わあわあと賑々しい声を聞きながら、小さなため息をつきつつ白い砂浜を眺める。
　そこに、二つの城があった。素材は砂で、造りは粗雑。だがしかし、その大きさだけは本物に迫るような勢いのあるサイズ感。
　いわゆる、砂の城というものだが――、
「どっちッスか、かか様！　どっちのが本物のあの城に近いッスか！　娘想いの忌憚ない意見ってやつを聞かせてほしいッス！」
　と、その不毛な争いの審判役を任され、途方に暮れてしまう。
　目の前の二つの城は、それらが作られた白い砂浜の向こうにある、湖の中に建てられた美しい城――そちらは本物だが、それがモデルになっている。そもそも、事の発端は、その城を訪ねる用事のあった連れの一人が、湖畔の砂浜から城を眺め、「故郷に砂で城を作る遊びがあって」とこぼしたことだった。
「マジッスか！　超ロマンチックじゃねーッスか！　そしたら、あーしが作った城のバルコニーで、今夜はお師様とシャルウィーダンスッス！」
　と、目を輝かせたシャウラが彼の言葉に乗っかり、砂浜に城作りを始めた。
　結果、作法的な問題で城に上げられないシャウラと、前科的な問題で城に上がれない自分たちとで、彼らの帰りを待つ間、その城作りを応援するはずだったのだが。
「あれよあれよという間に、誰が一番綺麗な城を作れるか競争する羽目に……まぁ、シャウラとレイドが張り合い出しただけだけど、何とも無邪気で子どもっぽいものだね」
「とか何とか傍観者気取りで大人ぶってるッスけど、かか様はただ単に砂掘る体力なくて力尽きただけッス。砂に負ける親とか、マジあーしの恥ッス」
「恥は言いすぎじゃないかな、恥は！　第一、砂に負けたわけじゃないし。ただ、無益な争いというものに嫌気が差して賢く撤退しただけだから」
「そッスね～、かか様偉い偉い。高い高いしてほしいッスか？」
「もう少し親に敬意を払ったらどうかな！　偉い偉いとか高い高いとか言ってないで、すごいすごいとかさ！」
「それで君がええんやったらええけど、僕には違いがようわからんわ」
　そう苦笑するアレクに、「むむ」と唇を曲げて押し黙る。
　湧いたのはやり込められた気持ちと、彼の言葉遣いへの素直な感心だった。ちゃんと、意味が通るように聞こえるのは大きな進歩だ。
「何事も、新しいものを作り始めるというのは一番エネルギーがいるものだ。言葉から団結力を培おうとは、よく考えたものだよ。ボクですら感心する」
「そうは言うても、ほとんどは人様の知恵を借りてしもたけどね。せやけど、これが馴染んだらなかなかええもんになると思うよ」
「そうだね。それはボクも――ひゃあああ！？」
　話している途中で、背中を指でなぞられる感覚に思わず飛び上がった。見れば、すぐ後ろで「かーっかっかっか！」と馬鹿笑いする憎たらしい赤毛がいる。
「なンでい、オメエ、もう少し色っぽい悲鳴上げろや。虫でも見つけたみてえに喚きやがって、萎えるったらねえぜ、オメエ」
「な、な、な、なんて言い草だ。人の体に気安く触るなんて……大体、アレクも言っていたが、君、ボクに全然興味なんてなかったはずだろう！」
「そりゃオメエがジャリだった頃の話だろうが。今、背も手も足も伸びて、乳と尻がでかくなった……ちと物足りねえが、なったンだ。だったらオメエも女だ、女」
「いいよ、結構だ。君に女扱いされるなんて、考えただけでもゾッとするよ。あと、お酌もしないから。飲みたいなら飲みたいもの同士、朝まで勝手にやればいい」
「ンだよ、酔っ払って下着で人前出たのまだ根に持ってンのかよ」
「うるさいな！　そういう余計な『記憶』を吹っ飛ばす魔法を作ってやるから、今に見てるといいよ」
　人の記憶に干渉するのは禁術間違いなしだが、オド・ラグナの目を誤魔化せるチャンスを掴めばいい。チャンスは一度きりでも、その一度のために開発する価値がある。
「いや、この際、レイドの中にあるボクの余計な『記憶』をまとめて消してしまった方が後々のためかもしれないな。初めての出会いとか、ボクの恥部だし……」
「ねーねー、かか様、まだッスかー？」
　ブツブツと呟く傍ら、シャウラが焦れた風に体を揺すりながら言ってくる。
　その背後、シャウラとレイドが競い合って作った砂の城は、基本的には砂山を作り、それを適当にくり抜いただけの粗雑な仕上がりだ。少なくとも、彼の語っていた芸術的なそれとはかけ離れたものに見えるが、努力は認めたい。
「とはいえ、ボクも見る目が養われているわけじゃない。素人目の評価になるが……」
「それで構わねッスよ！　あーしが欲しいのは勝利の勲章……それを持って、あーしはムカつくレイドに勝ち誇って、お師様の胸にフォーリンダイヴッス！　――って、あ」
　ぎゅっと自分を抱きしめて、気持ちの盛り上がったシャウラが大きく背を反らした。――その頭が砂の城とぶつかり、微妙な均衡にあった城がひび割れる。
　本物の城には及ばなくとも、家ぐらいには大きくできていた砂の塊だ。それが壊れて崩れ、さらに隣のレイドの城をも巻き添えに、連鎖で崩壊した。
「あ、オメエ、この野郎！　オレの城まで！」
「わーわー、事故ッス事故！　不可抗力ッス！」
「いやぁ、さすがにそれはどないやろ。僕からはよう言わん……って、あれ？　エキドナくん？　エキドナくん？　どこにいった？」
「ふぇ？　ぎええええ！　かか様、死んだッス！　生き埋めッス！　ツタンカーメンの秘宝と共に三千年の眠りについたッス！」
「かーっかっかっか！　砂遊びで死にかけるとか、やっぱガキだな、オメエ！」
　砂の崩壊から逃げ遅れ、全身を城の残骸に呑まれたこちらの被害に、シャウラの真剣味の足りない悲鳴と、腹立たしいレイドの馬鹿笑いが聞こえる。
　それらを砂に埋もれて聞きながら、
「な、なんで、地上最高の『魔女』であるボクがこんな目に……」
　と、弱々しく砂を掻きながら、すくい上げられるまでの時間を恨み節と共に過ごすしかないのであった。

　――余談だが、戻った彼が披露してくれた砂の城は、それはそれは大したもので、シャウラやレイドでは競うどころではなかったことを追記しておく。

I think what they misunderstood is most people want faster progression, but don't want to have endgame stuff like T4 armor and tanks until much later in the season. They hopefully, probably understand now and the next wipe will help a lot.

I think the current system is just not feasible long-term. If you think people are complaining now, wait until low level servers are dead and the only community servers still up are filled with lvl 40+ vets who play every day.

ANNOUNCEMENT 📢

Season 2 was meant to be a fresh start, and for a lot of you it hasn't felt like one. We sped up progression on deliberately and tried to balance the game better, as set out in the patch notes, but it was the wrong call.

Some players are reaching end game gear like Tier 4 armour and MBTs within days, so the wipe never really landed.

Some things are clearly out of balance and we'll fix them. Others have the community split, so we want to see how those play out first.

We won't be doing a knee jerk reset this weekend, as that would be unfair on everyone already enjoying the climb. Instead, we're looking at significantly bringing forward Season 3 and some of its content, so you get a proper fresh start. More details in our dev vlog next week.
