The law only established a pilot program. It was slated to happen in an area with the garbage containerization process complete. Like rodenticides, the rat birth control pellets are not expected to work if rats have easy access to trash. Don’t know if the pilot program has actually started yet or if it’s going well. There are also non-rodenticide methods to exterminate rats that are more humane and have fewer or no downstream consequences, but it doesn’t seem these are used in the park. And almost none if not none of the buildings around the park use those safer methods either.
We were pleasantly surprised to see the mysterious Central Park barn owl again over the weekend after incorrectly assuming that it was the one that was rescued from an Upper West Side fire escape a couple months ago.

I spotted a young Great Blue Heron fishing just after dawn at Central Park's Pool this week. I love how it looks suspended in mid-air in this shot. 🥰🥰🥰 #Heron#CentralPark#birdcpp
Happy International Owl Awareness Day! This is a previously unpublished photo of Flaco the owl from two years ago today. He is pictured on a favorite branch by Central Park’s Reservoir. The branch fell in a storm a while ago but the fond memories remain.

A ghost owl hunting in Central Park late last night. Barn owls are rare in the park, but one has been sighted occasionally for several weeks now. This was my first sighting of the owl. What a pleasant surprise! 👻🦉
