Let me say this about the Down’s Syndrome abortion debate, even if it makes some people mad.
I once was at the zoo with my family and saw a mother and father with their child who was profoundly mentally retarded. He was bound and strapped to a wheelchair as he flailed and screamed. They had to hold him down at times and cover his eyes to try to calm him. It was horrific. I don’t even know if he was self aware, or knew what was happening, but alternated between agonizing suffering and a calm vegetative state.
I knew that the child was only alive due to modern medical intervention and would have died shortly after birth at almost any other period in human history. And in that moment, I understood that there are some genetic conditions so terrible that they necessitate a decision to deny lifesaving care at birth…. And if a state law requires doctors do everything they can to keep an infant alive, maybe termination has to be considered… That’s hard for me as someone that’s pro-life to say, but I do not think God intended us to use machines to keep a human alive that he would have brought back into His arms 100% of the time prior to 20th century technology.
Disagree? Thats’s fine. I know it’s not going to be a widely accepted view on the Right.
Down’s Syndrome is different, though. These are not people in agonizing pain or a vegetative state. Do they face significant hurdles? Yes, but so do people born with OCD, schizophrenia, or missing limbs.
The difference is that people with Down’s Syndrome can survive the birthing process absent major medical interventions. They have existed throughout history and despite their uniqueness, they are conscious and sentient beings that smile, love, laugh, and cry. They are human beings living as humans do.
That’s the difference, as I see it. Maybe I’m ignorant having never raised a child with Down’s Syndrome, and it may seem like an argument made from moral convenience, but I simply do not believe that people with Down’s are so profoundly disabled as to warrant any consideration of termination.
Ehhh you could argue the only objective purpose of men or women is to procreate
All other "purposes" are technically superficial.
Like being the president, or a mechanic, or whatever. At the end of the day we evolved to fuck
The craziest part about the debate happening in the replies (and debates that always happen around this topic) is that nobody ever takes into consideration what a woman’s body goes through during childbirth.
Say that you choose to give birth to a child knowing they’ll have Down syndrome, you give them up for adoption (like the replies insist they should’ve done)… what about all the stress the woman’s body goes through to give birth? All that just to give the baby up for adoption?
A woman isn’t a machine created to give birth and have no other purpose. When put in a situation like this you HAVE to consider your financial state, your readiness to take on the amount of attentiveness and care you need to raise a child with special needs. If you aren’t ready, why put that child through what may be literal hell in the foster care system? Unless YOU are going to oversee it personally that the child lives a fulfilled life, I don’t wanna hear any opposition to their decision.
It’s shocking to me that this is even a debate.
you could never make me feel bad for men in dead bedrooms bc 99% of them did this to themselves
men LOVE the idea of women who are virgins, puritans or have low sex drives bc they tend to sleep with less ppl and then act surprised she doesn’t turn into the high libido sex goddess they wanted but didn’t marry bc they think she’s a slut
Just to be clear. THIS IS NOT SELFISH. Bringing the down syndrome child into the world is the selfish act!
Your child will most certainly out live you, develop dementia. Then, live out his days in between mental hospitals and the street.
Many such cases, and it's very sad
YouTuber Jesse Ridgway and his wife abort their child after finding out the baby had Down syndrome.
Ridgway cited that they chose to kill the baby after deciding that he and his wife didn't want to be inconvenienced with a child with Down syndrome.
"Things have been pretty dark for a while for us, and we felt this was gonna be a nice little ray of sunshine, and it's not."
Horrific and selfish.
An estimated 67% - 85% of pregnancies in the U.S. with a Down syndrome diagnosis are aborted.
This is evil. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
@esjesjesj Wow that was an undersell of all undersells.
What the article describes is a sexpest who is getting away with it cause people (like you) sweep for him
Everyone has to lie and convince themselves she's ugly because she's an e-thot and lies about being a virgin but let's not kid ourselves. If you claim she's ugly you're lying or gay.
Am I screwed? I turn 30 this year.
I have no friends, no family, and all I do is go work...
I feel like imma die like Yuji's grandpa, minus having a dope grandkid
When you’re 37 and you’ve had a regrettable divorce and a few rough goes, your Methodist pastor is going to sit you down at the pot luck and introduce you to Melodie, who he explains has also had some bad luck in relationships …
