How do young people justify verbally abusing someone much older than themselves? I’m trying to understand the reasoning behind the harsh language directed at the Prime Minister or other senior politicians. Set aside the fact that he holds the highest office. He is 75 years old, and many of these critics are one-third or even one-fourth his age. Is this how you would speak to your own parents or grandparents? Is this the way you were raised?
Rahul Gandhi is twelve years younger than I am, yet I would never use the kind of language against him that some of these young people used against Modi. It was magnanimous of the Prime Minister to overlook their behaviour, but it still reflects poorly on their upbringing.
Whenever I visited my maternal family home in Thrissur in the 1980s and early 1990s, I refused to smoke in front of my uncles even when I was earning, choosing instead to step outside after meals, despite their insistence that it was unnecessary.
I think, and maybe I’m wrong, but somewhere, some parents have failed their children. Perhaps they were too liberal. Perhaps, in their desire to be friends rather than parents, they neglected the boundaries and respect that parenting requires.
Is it too much freedom? Or unlimited access to social media? Or a failure to understand this generation?
Maybe I’m wrong. Or maybe I’m right. You tell me.
Incidentally, Australia, the first country this year to ban children under 16 from accessing social media, this week accepted that the move had failed. The children continue to use them. The ban, however, will stay in place. Is there a message in that?

Reading about the Air India passengers travelling from Phuket to Delhi who were tossed out of their seats and hit the ceiling of the aircraft when it plunged 300 feet, means they had unbuckled their seat belts once the plane took off. I guess when they announce, ‘keep your seat belt on’ they do so with the benefit of hindsight. But then we Indians love to think we know best. And now some clowns are going to sue the airline because they flew out of the seats.
