Strongly condemn the brutal manhandling and the unnecessary, violent excessive force unleashed on media personnel, women journalists, and peaceful protestors standing up against the #CtrlBill.

It is outrageous that MPs who rarely show up for their constituents suddenly have all the time and energy to push through such a repressive bill.

This bill is an attempt to strangle Maldives’ media outlets and intimidate journalists who dare to expose government corruption and hold those in power accountable. It seeks not only to repress and control the press but also to eliminate media freedom altogether.

We must all raise our voices and stand united to protect press freedom. Free media in the Maldives emerged in the face of an irrepressible pro-democracy movement. We cannot allow those hard-won freedoms to be undone.
