Meet Chromis abadhah, a new species from the Maldives that our team just described in collaboration with @MMRI_Maldives! The name abadhah means ‘perpetual’ in Dhivehi, to recognize @ROLEX Perpetual Planet initiative, which funded our work there. https://t.co/wnKkSzj57v

We commend President @MMuizzu for reversing the Cabinet decision on longlining in the Maldives. This wise choice safeguards the livelihoods of local fishers, supports our vibrant tourism industry, and preserves our precious marine biodiversity #AgainstLonglining@FishermensUnion
Longline fishing unintentionally captures sharks, manta rays, birds and other marine life. This has devastating consequences for the ocean’s health, biodiversity and our sustainable fisheries.

A delegation from the #Maldives is taking part in the 28th Session of the #IOTC being held in Bangkok. Maldives urges member States to prioritise the sustainability of the tuna stocks in the Indian Ocean during the 5-day negotiations. We call for the adoption of a sound management measure on drifting FADs and on the conservation of sharks. We also encourage members to adopt the proposal on a management procedure for skipjack tuna. Our hope is for the #IOTC to be a leader among #RFMOs in adopting science-based conservation and management measures for the betterment of the coastal communities and the health of tuna stocks.
