Gomal University Vice Chancellor Dr. Zafar Iqbal launched an investigation into what was described as one of the largest fake degree scandals in Pakistan’s history.

The probe reportedly created concern among several government officials and influential figures in Peshawar and Islamabad, who feared that their alleged involvement could be exposed in the coming days. This is being cited as one of the reasons behind Chief Minister Sohail Afridi’s decision to send Dr. Zafar on forced leave.

Dr. Zafar Iqbal holds a post-doctoral degree from the University of Oxford and was among the top candidates for the position of Vice Chancellor at Sahiwal University and Sargodha University. Academics of such caliber, critics argue, should be valued and protected by the state.
