Imagine a cell as a bustling city.
Which city institutions would represent cellular organelles?
How is a lysosome like a waste management system?
Could the ER be the city’s manufacturing hub?
(1/3)
These fascinating questions were explored in a session titled "Cell & Cities", organized by JPF iBRETA volunteers for 46 students from class 7th and 9th.
The session was led by iBRETA team members Kshitij Deshmukh, Pratik Joshi, Vedang Pawar, and Eeshani Abhyankar.

India has mostly been following the US initiatives in #research with a time lag of 5-10 years. Examples are our misisions on Nano, Space, Defense, AI, Quantum etc. With this approach, we will always remain a follower and will perennially be dependent on the west for technologies. It's time India looks at its own strengths, identifies domains and be the first in the world to launch some major research #initiatives. This however requires a #bold thinking, #coordinated investments and a #collaborative research mindset.
One of the areas that comes to my mind where India can take a lead is Bio-inspired research. #Bioinspired research is defined as studying and mimicking natural processes, systems, and structures found in living organisms to develop innovative technologies, products, and solutions.
Areas could be: Bio #mimicry, Bio-inspired #materials, Biomimetic #robotics, Biologically inspired #algorithms, Bio #informatics, Biologically inspired #design, #Neuroengineering, #syntheticbiology, Bio-inspired #energy, Bio-inspired #sensors and #devices etc.
India is indeed well-positioned to take up this research and become a world leader for the following reasons.
1. #Biodiversity: India is one of the world's most biodiverse countries, with a vast array of ecosystems and species. This rich biodiversity provides a wealth of inspiration for bio-inspired research.
2. #Traditional Knowledge: India has a long history of traditional knowledge that is deeply rooted in nature. Integrating this traditional wisdom with modern scientific research can lead to innovative product development.
3. R&D strengths: India has a growing pool of talented #researchers and engineers with expertise in various fields, including biology, biotechnology, materials science and robotics.
4. #Cost-effectiveness: India is known for its cost-effective research and development capabilities.
5. Growing #Innovation Ecosystem: India has been actively fostering an innovation ecosystem which supports and encourages bio-inspired research and its application to product development.
6. #Sustainable Solutions: Being the world's most populous country, we need to lead the world in sustainable technologies.
7. Diverse #Industries: India has a diverse range of industries, including healthcare, agriculture, textiles, and renewable energy. Bio-inspired research has immense potential to impact and enhance these sectors.
#Challenges:
While nature-designed processes have many advantages and are often incredibly #efficient, they are also complex. Because of the lack of #standardization, attempting to scale up these solutions for industrial applications, may not be as efficient or viable. That's where research is required.
#Approach:
Fund #CoEs in the areas mentioned above with the involvement of industry, government and philanthropists as part of the nation's sustainability goals.
A lot of fundamental, directed and #multidisciplinary research efforts are required for translation of observation and knowledge to technology and implementation. This requires the involvement of Govt, industry, startups and society.
At BITS Pilani we are working on some of these initiatives. @bitspilaniindia@IndiaDST
