🦇 Did you know?
…that protecting bat habitats is actually a key part of abandoned mine land (AML) reclamation? Many old mine portals and underground tunnels create cold, stable microclimates that bats rely on during winter hibernation — which means these forgotten spaces often serve as critical ecological resources, not just hazards to remediate.
Today’s AML projects are increasingly pairing engineering with ecological planning, so these unexpected habitats remain intact while reclamation work moves forward.

The environment isn’t separate from the systems we build — it shapes them. And the choices we make today determine how communities live, adapt and thrive for generations to come.
On World Environment Day, we’re reminded that environmental challenges — from climate pressures to resource management — are interconnected and accelerating, requiring solutions that consider how environmental, infrastructure and community needs are connected.
At Atlas, that work comes to life every day through environmental solutions that help communities move forward with clarity and resilience, from site assessments and remediation to air, land and water quality management and sustainable infrastructure planning.
We partner with clients to navigate complexity, reduce risk and create lasting value, bringing together natural, built and human systems so communities can flourish and thrive.

This Infrastructure Week (May 18–22), there’s a national spotlight on the systems that power and sustain our economy.
Infrastructure is no longer just foundational — it’s strategic to national resilience, security and long-term competitiveness.
Released in November, the White House’s 2025 National Security Strategy reinforces what many are seeing in real time: power, manufacturing, supply chains and mission-critical systems are central to how the U.S. defines strength and stability.
Atlas Chief Growth Officer Harshal Desai explores what this shift means for investment priorities — and for owners and developers navigating growing complexity.

Some of the most critical work on infrastructure projects happens behind the scenes.
It’s the testing, inspection and technical expertise working alongside delivery that helps teams navigate complexity and move forward with confidence.
Infrastructure Week is a moment to recognize how this work shapes the way communities grow, connect and thrive.
At Atlas, we see infrastructure as more than projects — it’s the foundation for opportunity. Across transportation, water, environmental solutions, energy and program management, we partner with clients to support systems people rely on every day.
Across the country, our teams bring an independent perspective and technical depth to complex infrastructure challenges — supporting projects not just in how they’re built, but how they perform over time.
As we kick off #InfrastructureWeek, we’re proud to stand alongside our partners in advancing infrastructure that helps communities flourish — today and for generations to come.
👉 Follow along this week as we highlight the people, projects and expertise behind the work — and the impact it’s having across the communities we serve. https://t.co/TQj3B990gi

What’s the real cost of not knowing what’s underground?
In infrastructure, some of the biggest risks are the ones you can’t see. Unknown or inaccurately mapped utilities can lead to delays, safety hazards, costly rework and public disruption — challenges that impact not just projects, but the communities they serve.
That’s why Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) should be viewed as an investment, not an added expense. When integrated early, SUE gives project teams the visibility they need to make smarter decisions, reduce risk and keep projects moving forward with confidence.
According to a Federal Highway Administration–sponsored study, every $1 invested in SUE delivers an average of $4.62 in measurable cost savings, with total returns ranging from $4–$20 when broader risk‑reduction benefits are considered.
In our latest Q&A, Randy Sanborn shares how Atlas is helping clients take a more proactive, data-driven approach — highlighting a recent GDOT project where 3D SUE modeling provided critical insight into underground and overhead utilities before construction began.
📍If you’re attending the TDOT-ACEC Partnering Conference this week in Chattanooga, connect with Randy Sanborn to learn how SUE can help strengthen project outcomes from day one.

What does quality actually look like on today’s most complex infrastructure programs?
According to Barry Burks, it’s not something you check at the end — it’s something that shapes how projects move forward every day.
In his latest Q&A, Barry shares what’s changing in construction quality and what it takes to apply Independent Quality Management (IQM) in fast-moving, high-stakes environments.
From digital inspection tools to real-time acceptance workflows, he shares how teams are moving faster while maintaining consistent, high standards.
Barry will be expanding on these ideas at the upcoming TDOT-ACEC Partnering Conference, May 11–13, in Chattanooga, TN.
📍 Session Spotlight: Independent Quality Management
🗓 Tuesday, May 12
⏰ 10:30 AM – 12 PM or 3:30 PM – 5 PM

🏆National Recognition for Engineering Excellence — and an Iconic Bridge
We’re proud to celebrate Placer County’s Foresthill Bridge and the leadership behind it as the Foresthill Bridge T-1 Steel Inspection and Repair Project earns a National Recognition Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ prestigious Engineering Excellence Awards program — one of the engineering profession’s highest distinctions.
As California’s tallest bridge, Foresthill Bridge is more than a landmark — it’s a lifeline for the region and a responsibility that Placer County embraces with vision, diligence and an unwavering commitment to public safety. Their proactive approach to infrastructure stewardship continues to set a national standard.
In partnership with Placer County, Atlas’ A-team took on one of the most technically demanding bridge inspection and repair efforts in the country — performing advanced testing and targeted repairs more than 700 feet above the American River, all while keeping traffic moving and protecting the public and project teams every step of the way.
The impact speaks for itself: safer travel for the community, zero safety incidents and a project helping inform national guidance for evaluating legacy steel bridges.
We’re honored to be recognized alongside Placer County through this national award — and to support work that strengthens critical infrastructure and the communities it serves.

🌍 Transforming environmental challenges into opportunity
Across the U.S., thousands of communities are working to safely reuse land impacted by past industrial and commercial use.
This Earth Day, we’re highlighting how Atlas supports environmental solutions that help communities reclaim these sites — starting with brownfield redevelopment.
“Brownfields work is about more than environmental cleanup. It’s about helping communities turn risk into opportunity — creating housing where there was once hazard, parks where there was once pollution and hope where there was once disinvestment,” said Kelly Schmitt, National Brownfields Director, Atlas.
Through environmental site assessments, remediation planning and regulatory coordination, Atlas helps protect land and water while supporting redevelopment that strengthens communities and the people who call them home.
Connecting Where Revitalization Begins
Our Brownfields Team will be attending several upcoming conferences to share expertise, exchange best practices and connect with leaders working to bring new life to underutilized spaces.
Connect with us at the following events:
•Ohio Land Bank Conference – Toledo, OH, April 22–24
•Arizona Brownfields Conference – Tucson, AZ, April 29–30

Investing in the Next Generation of STEM Leaders
Several A-team members from Atlas’ Indiana office — Eleanor Buchanan, Michael Ardis and Benjamin LaPointe — volunteered their time and expertise at the 37th Annual Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair, serving as Special Judges alongside the Indiana Association of Environmental Professionals.
Students in kindergarten through 12th grade showcased impressive Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) projects spanning environmental engineering, earth sciences, chemistry, plant sciences and sustainable energy. Their work reflected not only creativity and curiosity, but also a strong understanding of the scientific method, as students clearly explained their hypotheses, experimental design, data analysis and conclusions.
This community outreach effort exemplifies Atlas’ values in action — from Heart in giving back to our communities, to Mastery in sharing professional expertise, to Life in helping young innovators envision future careers in STEM.
“Volunteering with the students truly reflects Atlas’ values in action,” said Eleanor Buchanan, Atlas Environmental Science Project Manager. “When students see professionals take genuine interest in their ideas, it helps them realize their work matters — and that a future in STEM is possible.”
Thank you to our A-team members who continue to show up for their communities and inspire tomorrow’s environmental leaders.
