2. On Conditional Love for a Child: "If it's a girl, I will abandon you"
This is the most concerning point. The sex of a child is biologically determined and no woman has control over it. A partner who would threaten abandonment in a hospital - at a woman's most vulnerable moment - based on the gender of his own child, is showing a lack of empathy, emotional safety, and commitment.
This is not just about culture or preference; it's about conditional love and emotional security for both mother and child. A girl child deserves the same celebration and protection as a boy child.
If I were advising Kim as my client, I would ask her to pause and reflect on these questions:
- If you remove "Germany" from this equation, is this the kind of partner and father you want for your life and your future children?
- Have you both discussed these conditions openly with a neutral, trusted elder or counselor present?
- What is his plan for supporting you emotionally and legally during your integration in Germany if he is not working?
- Do you have a safety and support system if things don't work out after you relocate?
Relocation should be an _addition_ to a healthy relationship, not the _reason_ to endure an unhealthy one.
How you can support her as a friend:
You are right not to approach her with judgment. She may become defensive. Instead, lead with love and questions, not conclusions.
Try: "Kim, I love you and I want this dream for you so badly. Because I want it to last, can we talk about how you will feel safe and supported if these two situations happen? I am worried about you carrying everything alone."
IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA YESTERDAY
Between songs on my playlist and watching the sun go down, you must have crossed my mind, letting the sweet scent of your memories drift by. A feeling I misplaced tapped on my shoulders like an old friend. I bought it a drink of memory, dusted off a warmth I swore was dead. It seemed like a good idea yesterday. An old ache put on perfume and called itself a planโI believed it for an hour. Then the feeling forgot me first; funny how quickly a spark becomes a rumor. I take a long sip of my Chรขteau Margaux and grin. Some ghosts are better left alone.
