AUB has been exploiting its workers, especially daily wage workers, for years on end. However, with corona, this exploitation has reached its peak. It must end.
We do not commend “unquestioned loyalty” to institutions when this “loyalty” stems from insecurity and fear of unemployment which they are constantly threatened with. A sincere thanks for our valued workers is providing them with security and their rights.
It is poignant for the daily wage workers because they now make 410,000 LBP per month, or 100$ at the current market price. It is also painful because these workers who have made AUB what it is today face textbook alienation from the services AUB offers.
13/ - The provision of all permanent workers with all their rights
- The adequate retrospective compensation of daily-wage workers who have worked at AUB for years with no benefits, as per the Lebanese labor law.
12/ We repeat the demands that the student body and university faculty have called for:
- the end of employment through SAMCO
- The reemployment of SAMCO workers as permanent AUB workers
- The reemployment of workers who were forced to resign
11/ We assert that not only all AUB workers should have their jobs secured with full medical insurance, but they are also entitled to stay home while getting paid their full monthly salaries and offered adequate protection while working in essential roles.
10/ It is thus clear that the administration is putting its finances above the safety and livelihood of its workers, making them pay for its losses originating from its bad-management and corruption.
9/ As for daily-workers on the job, SAMCO and the administration refuse to equip them with adequate protection (masks, gloves etc.) taking budget constraints as an alibi.
8/ In the month of April 2020 alone, more than 100 workers were forced to resign. Others have been threatened with forced resignation, especially permanent workers threatened with being replaced by daily-wage workers.
7/ Since October 2019, the workers have seen their already minimal rights diminish day after day. Their working days were cut down from 23 to 16 and later to 10. At 41,000 L.L per day, this brings their monthly salary to 410,000 L.L, or 100$ at the current market price.
6/ More recently, AUB has violated the decisions of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Interior through requiring its daily workers to go to work for non-essential services, threatening their health and that of their families.
4/ Countless personal accounts have come into light concerning AUB’s negligence of its workers who are, at many times, forced into high-risk tasks with no medical insurance or sick leaves, which led to grave injuries to several workers.
3/ We hold the AUB administration accountable since it is the main beneficiary of the labor of these employees, and since their livelihood and safety is AUB’s responsibility, emphasizing the double standard with the alleged values of the university.
0) In commemoration of Labor Day, we extend our utmost solidarity with the daily-wage and permanent workers at the American University of Beirut and their ongoing struggle against their exploitation by the university administration.

2/ Workers are not given any benefits (basic human rights) medical insurance, NSSF, maternity leave, paid sick leave, coverage of ON THE JOB INJURIES, and no retirement benefits even for those who have been working sometimes more than 20 years.
1/ AUB has been violating Lebanon’s Labor Laws for over 10 years via a sub-contractor SAMCO. The company strictly employs daily workers (SAMCO), illegal as per the law as the majority of employees should be permanent employees and receive the associated benefits.
