1. Ensure full Covid-secure school re-opening in January 2021 as planned.
Development Partners encourage government to fast-track preparations, so that the 7.2 million children still at home can go back to school as soon as possible.
2. Target support for the most marginalised children. We know #COVID19 has had a disproportionate impact on girls, children with disabilities, and lower-income households. We need to bring ALL children back to school – especially girls.
3. Support teachers on the front-line. Most teachers stopped teaching in March. Teachers may have lost income or feel underprepared to return to school. It is important that government focuses on enhancing teachers’ capacity in remedial teaching & psychosocial support.
4. Refocus on measuring outcomes for teachers and children. With significant reforms to the education system, it is now time to switch to measuring progress on ‘delivery’, and outcomes for teachers and children: measuring re-enrolment figures, out-of-school children, attendance.
5. Strengthen collaboration across ministries. #COVID19 has shown the importance of the Ministry of Education working closely with others. This is critical for improving school health provision, addressing sexual and gender-based violence and addressing education inequalities.
