Australia 🇦🇺 is pleased to chair #BMS9.
Illicit small arms continue to drive global conflict, crime and human suffering worldwide. This week, we will work with States to translate commitment into urgently-needed impact.
Australia is disappointed that the 11th NPT Review Conference did not reach consensus despite best efforts of many. Sincere thanks to @dohungviet and UNODA. Despite the lack of formal outcome, there is strong commitment to the NPT and its essential role.
Four weeks of in-depth discussions at the 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty allowed for a thorough review of the three pillars of the NPT, and the affirmation of the vital role of the @iaeaorg in supporting the implementation of the Treaty.
Despite the lack of a final outcome document, the NPT and IAEA continue to serve global peace and development by preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and enabling peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The significance of the NPT is not defined by the absence of an agreement on a Final Declaration.
I applaud the tireless efforts of Ambassador @dohungviet of 🇻🇳.
The IAEA will not stop for a single minute in advancing these objectives!
In this third week of the #NPTRevCon, as we work to build consensus on a final outcome, let us bring the best of diplomacy to bear.
Pressure won’t help. Engagement will. Blaming won’t help. Understanding will. Threat won’t help. Flexibility will.
Let’s get in done, together!
When I started working on arms control there were few women in the room. Today I am proud to have colleagues making a difference at #NPTRevCon, with impactful discussions at #UNIDIR’s side event on #NPT and UNSCR1325 with 🇮🇪🇳🇦🇵🇭 Gender equality means better outcomes!
“Before the #NPT treaty was agreed, it was predicted that there would be >30 nuclear weapon states. That didn’t happen because of the NPT”

In Main Committee III of the #NPTRevCon, Australia reaffirmed our strong commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology.
This is underpinned by the highest standards of safety, security and safeguards, delivering real benefits globally.
My message to the upcoming NPT Review Conference:
“The diplomatic path is demanding, often frustrating, and rarely produces the dramatic breakthroughs that capture headlines, but it remains the only path that does not court catastrophe.”

Without the #NPT, the world would be a more dangerous and unpredictable place.
Our responsibility is clear.
We must protect the Treaty, we must strengthen it, and we must ensure it continues to deliver in a very different world from the one in which it was negotiated.
30 years on, the #CTBT’s mission matters more than ever.
At #NPTRevCon, the #CTBTO brought States Signatories together for a side event, "NPT & CTBT: Galvanizing Action” to keep the global ban on nuclear test explosions moving forward.

Positive exchange with 🇦🇺 @dfat Assistant Minister @MThistlethwaite in New York on the importance of the #NPT, the situation in Iran, and nuclear safety and security in Ukraine.
Appreciate Australia’s commitment to working with the @IAEAorg on #AUKUS to ensure the highest non-proliferation standards.
Australia is proud to Chair the Board of Governors for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the first time in over two decades. Australia’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN explains the vital work of the IAEA in maintaining global peace and security.
During the 17th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Inter-Sessional Meeting on Non-Proliferation & Disarmament, @DrRobFloyd spoke about the importance of building confidence and trust in challenging times for the non-proliferation and disarmament architecture.
