Her "different time" defence is logically weak: it conflates (perceived) lack of public debate in 2013 with absence of foreseeable risks, ignoring that predicting erosion of sex-based rights was basic due diligence for any legislator amending discrimination law. They were warned at the time.

It is intellectual cowardice from her. No call to repeal the changes, restore biological definitions, or support fixes for issues like single-sex spaces and Tickle v Giggle - only an attempt to distance herself from consequences without admitting error.

She’s talking as if all money is the government’s money first, and that anything not taxed is a “subsidy.” That’s the rhetorical trick being played here.

Income belongs to the earner.
The government takes a portion via tax.

If the government doesn’t take some portion, that is not spending — it’s simply not taking.

And that leads us to the real issue here with people like Clare - they see everything you earn to be considered government money first, then any tax cut is a “gift,” and any deduction is a “subsidy.”
