Philosophy has cultural standing only up to a point. People think it’s cool if you have worn copies of Sartre or Hegel. Most people don’t care if you have opinions about Gibbardian norm-expressivism
They keep using this line about shopping for healthcare like it’s buying a car or plane tickets and not “there’s an extremely time sensitive and dramatic medical thing happening right now and you need to make decisions very quickly.”
Which is how it often works.
similarly in "The Sopranos," the classically trained psychoanalyst takes as her challenge uncovering the root (childhood) origins of her client's panic attacks; totally ignoring, oblivious of, as if in a parody of American feel-good ethos, the fact that an individual who make his living by extortion & frequent murders certainly should feel guilty, & indeed panicked.
hilariously, though there is nothing funny about it, psychotherapy's goal has always been to allow an individual to function in society without crippling neurosis.
to allow Tony Soprano to function smoothly as a mob boss is the goal.
therapy/psychoanalysis: how to conform to/function in society even if that society is totally corrupt & should be repudiated.
CAUGHT BY THE TIDES is a remarkable document - the summation of one of the great auteur’s oeuvre, a striking meditation on 21st century China, a genre-defying, time-hopping hybrid work. It is also the only movie that feels like going dancing :,)
Hello everyone! We just passed 5k followers, thank you. I’m not really used to doing giveaways, but here we are.
To celebrate the milestone, I’m giving away this beautiful wool–cashmere overcoat made in England.
Since people generally repost far less than they like, using reposts will naturally keep the number of entries lower.
So if the measurements (see comments below) work for you and you’re interested, just repost this. I’ll pick someone at random tomorrow at the same time.
Shipping is on me, just make sure you live somewhere with a functioning postal system.
Thanks again for the support, Truly.
One of the things that irritates me about the worst centrist commentators is the juxtaposition between the self-consciously "adult" tone and the breezy superficiality of the analysis; usually just building off instinctive appeals to elite conventional wisdom.
The vibe I get off that celebrity is always this sort of imperialist victim; that they want to conquer everything and place themselves as essentially powerful above everyone whilst also possessing even the power of victimhood. But I may be wrong, I don’t pay much attention.
