In case you missed it, this is what to expect from the upcoming Rwanda Startup Act:

1. Zero-rated PAYE up to Rwf1 million

This reduces the cost to startups of employing talent, meaning that PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is charged at 0% for a portion of salary less than Rwf1 million.

2. Accelerated depreciation (100% per year)

Using accelerated depreciation allows startups to fully account for expenditure on research and development and asset acquisition, which, in the long run, reduces corporate income tax (CIT) obligations.

3. VAT and CIT taxes exempted

The Startup Act proposes to exempt players in the ecosystem from paying value-added tax for 5 years.

4. Credit guarantee scheme

This provides more access to credit for startups.

5. Intellectual property support

According to the Act, this provides technical support to acquiring trademarks and patents to support startups to monetize their innovation.

6. Seed innovation fund

Provides initial working capital for startups and makes it easier to attract investments.

7. Immigration incentives

To attract more international talent to the Rwandan startup ecosystem.

8. Leave for the creation of startups

Encourages startup creation by minimizing risks for founders in case the startup fails.

9. Exemption from the payment of tax on shares

Exemption of all taxes chargeable on shares owned by startup founders and employees.
