We’re thrilled to welcome Austin Lui and Peter Schaible to The Henry Ford Providence/MSUCHM Neurosurgery Residency Program! Wishing them an incredible journey ahead. #match2026@CNSResidents
I am very grateful to have matched into neurosurgery residency! It is a dream come true.
Thanks for all my mentors, friends, family and loved ones who supported and believed in me all this time. I cannot thank you enough.

Truly honored to receive both 1st and 5th place for the Student Robert C. Erwin Literary Awards this year, recognizing excellence in surgical research among medical students. Grateful to contribute to the academic surgical community as I apply for the 2026 neurosurgery match. @ACOSurgeons@ACOS_MSS@WeAreTouro #Neurosurgery #MedTwitter #ACOS #AcademicSurgery
@DrDiGiorgio Because of DiGiorgio's mentorship, I am where I am today. He is one of the most knowledgable, empathetic, and passionate physicians I have ever seen, someone not afraid to advocate for patients and point out barriers in healthcare. Couldn't have asked for a better mentor.
Grateful for the opportunity to present my project for the CSNS med student fellowship in socioeconomic research, examining the impact of socioeconomic-related factors on psychological outcomes in patients after traumatic spinal cord injury. @councilsns@track_sci@DrDiGiorgio
Scientific community: "Why are certain socioeconomically disadvantaged groups under-represented in research studies?"
Also, scientific community: "We want expensive and cumbersome outcome metrics that only ivory tower institutions can afford."
It's important to utilize meaningful, yet reasonable, outcome metrics for research.
Our paper here shows that the ISCNSCI exam can be supplemented by a much simpler, cheaper, and easier strength examination performed by the clinical team.
Lets make spinal cord injury research more widespread by utilizing simpler outcome measures.
Important paper we collab w @DrDiGiorgio@track_sci . ISCNSCI exams are time consuming , training is $$$ and limit successful data collection in #spinalcordinjury trials . Our co authors led by @AustinLui7 showed nearly identical correlation with neurosurgery motor exams (NME)!
Out today in @Cancer_Cell, @meeki_lad from my lab shows that skull bone marrow contributes "hybrid neutrophils" to GBM with antigen-presenting capacity allowing an anti-tumoral response. Intracalvarial AMD3100 releases these cells and prolongs survival! https://t.co/1xwjsvxs28
👏🏻Great work @DrDiGiorgio doing the important work testifying before the US Senate Committee on the Budget to help alleviate burdens such as prior auth, meaningless “quality” measures, & inefficient health care regulations

Looking at this from an economic lens:
Existing workforce (clinicians) can collect adequate motor score data for research. The marginal benefit of having trained ISNCSCI examiners collect motor scores is minimal. Yet the cost is immense.
@SpineNeuro@JPGK_MD
Can the neurological motor exam substitute for the ISNCSCI in spinal cord injury patients?
@AustinLui7 presenting our data from TRACK-SCI showing that the two are highly correlated.
This is important for expanding research to low-resource hospitals which can’t dedicate research staff to collecting the cumbersome ISNCSCI.

Our next guest speaker at our Resident/Fellow Forum is @TouroUniversity Medical Student Austin Lui, who will present, "Differences in Demographics, Clinical, and Functional Outcomes Between Medicaid Versus Private Insurance Patients with Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury."

Thankful to be able to present our research on peri-operative outcomes in central cord vs non-central cord patients at the 2023 spine summit! As always, thanks to @DrDiGiorgio for all the guidance! #2023spinesummit#DPSN
