@maryannehobbs This Is A Low… I was lonely and couldn’t sleep in a strange place aged 15 and put on radio 1 on my Walkman in bed. A live Blur concert. This song was being played and I learned I never need to be lonely if I have a radio.

Every word is exactly the right one. Inventing a word like "salitter". Who else can do that? Dropping in the common word "delicious", making it more effective than an entire page.

I've never encountered more astonishing and original fiction writing than in the novels of Cormac McCarthy. His work is incredible and in many ways utterly unrivalled. The media are highlighting films, but it's his craftsmanship as a writer that was so rare as to be unique.
