Nanoplastics and human health risks

In his speech at the European Parliament, Pastor Mark Burns drew attention to nanoplastics as an emerging global concern affecting human health.

He explained that due to their extremely small size, nanoplastics can enter the human body, penetrate cells, and travel through the bloodstream to organs. According to cited research, plastic particles have been detected in blood, lungs, liver, placenta, and brain tissue.

He also noted that exposure occurs daily through air, water, and food, and that early studies suggest potential impacts on cells, inflammation, and biological systems.

According to him, nanoplastics should be considered not only an environmental issue, but a growing public health concern.

Scientists have found that nanoplastics penetrate into the bone marrow and thymus - the organs where blood and immune cells are created.
Bone marrow is the body’s factory. It produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, and its stem cells regenerate bones, muscles, and tissues.
When nanoplastics damage these cells, the consequences are fundamental.
Blood production declines.
Immunity weakens.
Bleeding risk increases.
At the same time, bones become more fragile and heal slower.
This is not just damage to one system - it is damage to the body’s ability to renew itself.

Maryna Ovtsynova, President of the ALLATRA International Public Movement, and Pastor Mark Burns, founder of Spiritual Diplomacy global initiative and spiritual advisor to the U.S. President Donald Trump, took part in the World Changers Summit 2025 held at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in Vatican City.

The high-profile event, organized by the Institute for Advanced Studies and Cooperation (IASC) under the leadership of Prof. Gabriele Pao-Pei Andreoli, brought together scientists, spiritual leaders, policymakers, and innovators from around the world to explore the moral and technological frontiers of human progress under the theme “Transcendence: Unveiling the Future of Humanity.”

Pastor Burns opened the Summit’s scientific session at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, where he addressed the importance of moral leadership and interfaith unity in shaping the ethical development of technology.

Representing the ALLATRA International Public Movement, Maryna Ovtsynova emphasized the importance of collective responsibility and collaboration between science, faith, and civil society to address pressing ecological and humanitarian challenges. ALLATRA and the Society of Jesus meet in Rome to strengthen scientific and ethical cooperation

On October 31st, at the General Curia of the Society of Jesus, a meeting took place between Maryna Ovtsynova, President of the ALLATRA International Public Movement, and Rev. Fr. Bernardo Mercado, Provincial Superior of the Society of Jesus in Bolivia. The meeting, held in a spirit of mutual respect and open dialogue, focused on strengthening collaboration between the scientific and ethical communities in advancing planetary care and sustainable development.

During the meeting the parties discussed the strategic alliance signed between ALLATRA and the Society of Jesus in Bolivia on October 13, 2025. This alliance is inspired by the Global Apostolic Preferences of the Jesuits and Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’.

“Today, the time has come to consolidate all our resources, knowledge, and goodwill in order to strengthen the dialogue between science and ethical responsibility for the protection of our common planet–our Home given to us by God,” emphasized Maryna Ovtsynova.

The meeting concluded with a mutual confirmation of the willingness of both parties to continue joint activities and develop initiatives aimed at education, environmental awareness, and strengthening global responsibility.
