@HistoryBowsh@austdef Close but no cigar Jack. The 10th Division was formerly a Militia Division. The 10th Division proposed for the invasion of Japan was not - it was to be made up of AIF troops from the 6th, 7th and 9th Divisions which had been fighting the Japanese since 1942 or 1943.
Imagine FDR inviting Churchill to the White House to convince him to make peace with Hitler in 1940, offering a horribly one-sided economic deal, no security guarantees, before finally humiliating him in front of the whole world in the Oval Office.
@OurNewHomecoach @marcuskelson Depends where in Aus. Brisbane (and most of Queensland for that matter) is another world from Melbourne or Tazi, for example. And if you think Australians are racist, you should try rural France, USA, or pretty much any country in Asia!
@project4_4 Probably much of the South West Pacific campaign - New Guinea, Timor, Dutch East Indies, Borneo...not that I'm biased 😜 Otherwise, I'd say China - the sheer numbers (including the majority of Japan's armies) and size of the theatre is incredible.
@rgpoulussen Does anyone know how many of the 24% completed their tours, and how many were those still flying (with unfinished tours) when the war ended? I assume 24% includes both, and if so the odds of completing a tour would actually be less than 24%.
@danieljleahy@ErnestMalley@clark_aviation Not wrong! Super important aircraft in the RAAF: strategic, tactical and torpedo bomber; anti-submarine patrols; recon; transport etc. A jack of all trades.
@TheUCS473 Wait until you see how many Australian vs American divisions there were in the Pacific between 1941-43! US made the absolutely crucial contribution in the air and on the sea, but Australian land forces were arguably more important. Of course, US numbers rocketed in 1944-45.
@Tac_Takeover Great game! Can I send you a joes (mostly 1000-1500) link? Epic back and forth game game with salvations, telemazers, paragon, and a final clutch snipe…all with a bucket load of supcom head 😂
@redunley@UNSWCanberra Hey Richard, this looks amazing! Any chance you could put me in touch with the creators? Project44 Australia is tracking (and eventually mapping) the locations of every RAAF squadron daily for all of WW2 and I'm hoping they might have some data to contribute.
@drjpersian What offends you about the use of ‘entrusted’? Radar absorbent coatings are highly sensitive tech. It’s provision comes with risks to the American military/defence sector so it shouldn’t be surprising they only do so with allies they trust.
@Tom_Zawisza@Alan_Allport Have you done any other similar analyses? This is fantastic and would love to see more like this, particularly at a macro level.
@Alan_Allport Has anyone collected data on all bomber squadrons/aircrews throughout the war? I’ve seen casualty/survival etc stats from individual squadrons or campaigns, but would love to see a data set you can interrogate across any timespan for any unit or groups of units.
