This photograph captures the moments after civil rights activist James Meredith was shot during the 1966 March Against Fear, a campaign he organized to challenge racism and encourage African Americans to register to vote across the Deep South.
Meredith had already made history in 1962 as the first African American student admitted to the University of Mississippi. Although the university attempted to block his enrollment after discovering he was Black, a federal court ordered his admission. His arrival on campus sparked violent riots, and he entered the university under the protection of federal marshals and other law enforcement officers.
On June 5, 1966, Meredith began a 220-mile solo walk from Memphis, Tennessee, to Jackson, Mississippi. Just one day into the march, near Hernando, Mississippi, he was ambushed by Aubrey James Norvell, who emerged from roadside brush and fired several shotgun blasts, striking Meredith in the head, neck, and back. Although law enforcement officers were nearby, they were unable to prevent the attack.
Meredith survived his injuries. Rather than ending the campaign, the shooting inspired major civil rights leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr., Stokely Carmichael, and Floyd McKissick, to continue the March Against Fear. Thousands of people joined the demonstration, and Meredith rejoined the march near its conclusion on June 26, when it reached Jackson.
Norvell was convicted of assault and received a relatively light sentence, serving about two years in prison.
Today, James Meredith remains a powerful symbol of courage and perseverance. At 93 years old, he is one of the last surviving figures whose actions helped reshape the American civil rights movement.
🏛️ THE HALLWAY THAT RULED THE ANCIENT WORLD
Step into this stone corridor at Persepolis, and you’re not just walking through ruins—you’re entering the heartbeat of a superpower. Carved nearly 2,500 years ago under the Achaemenid kings Darius I and Xerxes I, these towering limestone figures stand in perfect order, like time-frozen guards of an empire. Their calm faces, identical posture, and endless symmetry send one clear message: authority, discipline, and control. Above them, the ceiling blooms with carved flowers and sacred symbols, whispering of divine protection and cosmic order.
But here’s the twist—Persepolis was never a city to live in. It was a ritual capital, built for moments that mattered. Every year during Nowruz, envoys from across the known world—stretching from the Indus Valley to the Mediterranean—walked these very paths, carrying gifts, tribute, and loyalty. Imagine the sound of footsteps, the rustle of robes, the weight of empire pressing down this corridor. Even today, the silence feels deliberate, powerful… almost commanding. Some places don’t just show history—they make you feel how small you are inside it.
Yak attack
Cheryl and I bumped into this yak after losing our guide during a ten hour uphill trek above the Tiger’s Nest Monastery near Paro. Immediately before I turned on the camera, she asked, “Do you think it’s dangerous?” Grateful to the yak for retreating when I struck him on the snout with my cell phone. Happy 80th Birthday to #lindaronstadt. I adore her & admire her bravery, intelligence, kindness, her humor and friendship, and of course the way she could sing a song. She did stunning versions of several JW songs-every song she touched was beautifully sung. @RonstadtMovie
