The Renault 5 Maxi Turbo is the ultimate evolution of the mid-engined R5 Turbo, specifically engineered for the legendary Group B rally era. While the original Turbo 1 and Turbo 2 were formidable, the Maxi (launched in 1985) was a purpose-built tarmac specialist designed to reclaim Renaultโs dominance against the rising tide of all-wheel-drive competitors.ย
The Maxi used a massive Garrett T31 turbocharger and pioneered a "DPV" (Dispositif de Pre-Rotation Variable) system to minimize turbo lagโa precursor to modern anti-lag systems.
Unlike the Audi Quattro or Peugeot 205 T16, which used 4WD to conquer gravel and snow, the R5 Maxi Turbo remained RWD. This made it a specialized "scalpel" for paved stages.
The Maxi is instantly recognizable by its extreme wide-body kit, massive integrated front spotlights, and the large rear spoiler designed to keep the rear-heavy car pinned through corners.
Only 20 units of the full-spec "Maxi" were officially produced for competition homologation, making them some of the rarest and most expensive Renaults in existence. Today, they are prized for their "flame-spitting" character and as a symbol of the peak of 1980s rally engineering.
I always wondered how good the Maxi would have been with 4WD but clearly there was the Peugeot 205 T16 E2.

Audi Sport Quattro.
One of the most unique shapes to ever come out of the 80s.
A shortened version of the Ur Quattro boxy coupe that looks like nothing else.
2.1 L Turbocharged five-cylinder with 306 hp in the road-going version, which was huge for the time.
This Audi was so quick that it could embarrass the Lamborghini Countach at the time, 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.
This was built for rally homologation, so it was limited to 214 units.
Directly connected to the Group B era and cars like the S1 Quattro.
Today these cars can go for over a million โฌ for just well preserved examples with low mileage.
BMW 135i E82.
A small coupe with a turbo straight six and rear-wheel drive.
That formula alone made enthusiasts love it which still remains today in the M240i and M2 form.
The N55 engine replaced the earlier N54 and is generally considered the more reliable version, while still being very tunable.
Compact size, short wheelbase and strong power make it feel very balanced.
Simple idea, executed properly.
One of the most loved modern classic BMW coupes.

Fred Finn
British businessman Fred Finn holds the Guinness World Record for most Concorde flights with 718 trips between 1976 and 2003, accumulating over 22 million kilometers (about 15 million miles) and famously present for the first and last flights.ย
He always booked seat 9A, a window seat in the front section, where he'd often find a complimentary bottle of Dom Pรฉrignon.
At his peak, he'd take two or three round trips a week between London and New York, sometimes completing three returns in just 12 hours.
He was on both the first and final Concorde flights, making him a true aviation legend.
His frequent flights were for business, allowing him to get significant work done in the US and still be back in the UK quickly, a huge advantage over standard flights.ย
The average flight time between London and New York was just over three hours, compared to more than eight hours on a normal jumbo jet.
It is estimated that Mr. Finnโs flights on Concorde cost in the region of ยฃ2 million, with a return trip to New York costing about ยฃ5,000 in the months before the aircraft was taken out of service.
Seated back in 9A on Concorde 216, which hasnโt moved from Filton since its final flight on November 26, 2003, Mr. Finnย said: โItโs a great shame that sheโs not still in the air, but the plane looks almost brand new โ sheโs being well looked after.
โI first flew on her on May 26, 1976 โ the first flight from Washington to London and was on the last flight from New York to London on October 24, 2003.
His favorite Concorde is 216 G-BOAF, whichย is currently grounded at Filton and not on display to the public.
