Money can do crazy things to a person. Both Tom and Daisy no longer see the world around them bc they’re so caught up in the awful thrill of money. They believe they have the world at their fingertips. #TGGCash#TGGFake#ch9
Tom only cares about himself. He saved himself and got Gatsby killed. I feel like he wanted Gatsby to be dead more than anyone bc he saw him as a threat. #TGGFake#ch9
Nobody came to Gatsby’s funeral. Only a few people. However, there was a “thick drizzle” (174). Another reference to rain in a sad and difficult situation. #TGGWaste#TGGSymbol#ch9
The rain might be a symbol for something bad, something sad. Earlier in the book, when it rained Daisy would be crying and when it stopped she’d stop with it. Now, Gatz is looking at the rain in a worried and uncertain type of way. Another coincidence? #TGGSymbol#ch9
On pg 173 there’s a list of things Gatsby wanted to do. Everything had to go as planned, and it had to be done accordingly. As we can see, things don’t end up well when they go off plan... #TGGWaste#TGGFake#ch9
Meyer Wolfsheim and Gatsby did some “dirty” work together in the past, I believe. When asked to go to Gatsby’s funeral, he said he doesn’t want to get himself mixed up in that kind of stuff. Hmmm... sketchy much? #TGGFake#TGGWaste#ch9
A bit of irony here! When Gatsby and Wilson’s deaths were described, the author said, “the holocaust was complete” (170). And now when Nick went to NY to visit Meyer Wolfsheim, he saw “The Swastika Holding Company.” Coincidence? #TGGSymbol#ch9
Ppl knew Gatsby for his 💸. They basically used him for his parties, that’s about it. Nobody cared about him as a person, & nobody is bothered or sad by the news of his death. I guess $ really is everything in this book. Ppl are willing to!put $ over death #TGGCash#TGGFake#ch9
It’s so sad how people don’t really seem to care about Gatsby’s death. When Nick tried calling people to let them know, some asked for their tennis shoes back and others tried to indirectly say Gatsby deserved it. Nobody ever tried to understand him, they just judge immediately.
Gatz asked Nick if he were a friend of Gatsby's and he replied, “we were close friends” (168). Nick considered Gatsby to be a close friend of his, regardless of whether or not he agreed with the man. This is why Nick is on his side— he’s the only 1 who tries to understand Gatsby.
Gatsby’s dad came by. At this point in his life, death didn’t surprise him. He was almost more proud than anything else of his son. Looking at Gatsby's house, his furniture, he couldn’t believe his eyes. #TGGCash#ch9
Tom and Daisy planned this. How can Daisy possibly be going along with it?! They knew it would be pinned back on Gatsby. Daisy says absolutely nothing, she plots against the man she supposedly “loved.” #TGGFake#ch9
Tom is running away with Daisy. Myrtle was his mistress and she’s now dead. Is he trying to save himself? Is Daisy doing the same thing- saving herself from her mess? #TGGFake#ch9
Catherine cannot believe her sister was involved in any affairs. She tries to convince herself that her sister was happily married and never got herself into trouble. But let’s be real, even she can’t fully believe herself. Deep down she knows this isn’t true. #TGGFake#ch9
Only Nick seemed to be on Gatsby's side. He seemed to be almost as alone as Gatsby was in his lifetime. I think Nick was the only one who got to know Gatsby more and more, so he felt obligated and determined to stay on his side. #TGGWaste#ch9
