Anyone investing private capital for carbon removal only (not utilization), is essentially taking a bet on future policies that provide a large market for their service. Everyone - investors, the companies, etc - better be financially prepared to wait for that policy, or figure out another source of sustainable revenue.
My new company Metalplant has soft-launched out of stealth. Don't let the name fool you, Metalplant is a carbon dioxide removal company that uses plants to mine for nickel released from olivine as the minerals weather (and from natural nickel present in the soils).
“The goal of Metalplant is to help us overcome the problem of nickel being released during enhanced weathering, and by recovering pure nickel from the plant tissues, we can turn nickel from a weakness of the weathering process, into an economically valuable strength...”

Onwards!
Excited to announce the launch of Metalplant, a company that produces nickel by mining the soil with plants, while removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through enhanced rock weathering (ERW).
Metalplant was formed to solve the problem of metals released during the ERW of olivine, and to turn that problem into a solution that makes the process economically viable by recovering the nickel to pure nickel products that can be used in electric vehicle batteries and stainless steel (nickel sells for ~$20,000 per tonne).
Currently, around 3 million tonnes of nickel are mined per year, but that needs to double by 2040 to not slow down the clean energy transition. Our process could produce the extra 3 million tonnes of nickel needed, while also removing 1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide yearly. We can use this single stone to solve two of the world's most pressing problems.
