The first agricultural revolution in South India began not in the deep south or the Deccan plateau at large, but in present-day Karnataka. Neolithic settlements at Budihal, Sanganakallu and Kodekal pioneered farming, cattle herding and permanent village life thousands of years ago. "It was during the Neolithic that much of the basic linguistic geography of the subcontinent is likely to have been established, including the regional distributions of Dravidian, Munda, and Indo-Aryan language families," the research says.

These early farming communities laid the foundations for South India's first civilization in Karnataka. Archaeological and linguistic evidence also suggests that this Neolithic period saw the emergence and spread of the Dravidian language family, making Karnataka its earliest known homeland.

The story of Indian agriculture was never a single story. Different regions developed farming independently, each with its own crops, livestock and traditions. But the Karnataka Neolithic stands out as the birthplace of South India's agricultural civilization and one of the key chapters in the origins of Dravidian language family.

While agriculture in other parts of India saw influences from outside, it was in Karnataka that "The case for a truly independent origin of agriculture in South Asia is strongest in the southern peninsula of India."
