Erdoğan is shameless. I understand the instinct to defend your nation’s history; but what he said is a flat lie.

Imagine a German Chancellor declaring that German history holds no genocide, while the memory of the Holocaust is still living. That is exactly what Erdoğan has done. Türkiye’s genocides against the peoples of the Middle East; Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians; are undeniable, and against the Kurds they continue to this day.

If Türkiye wants to cleanse its history, the only path is to face it: to recognize what was done and apologize where apology is owed. There is no shame in that. The shame is in denial; in lying and bullying to bury the truth, because a nation that refuses to name its past crimes is only clearing the ground to repeat them.
Real change begins with real repentance.
