If there are allegations to answer, let the courts determine them fairly. If there is a case, let it be heard without unnecessary delay. But justice must never become indefinite punishment before judgment.

To those in authority: power is temporary, offices are temporary, and positions of influence will one day be left behind. What remains is the record of how we used the power entrusted to us.

Amidst the Praise, He Left quietly.

One of the most profound and unforgettable days of my life was 28th May, 2023 the last day of His Excellency, Malam Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai, as Governor of Kaduna State.

After delivering his farewell address, Malam thanked his colleagues, family, friends, appointees, civil servants, and the people of Kaduna State for their support, patience, and commitment throughout his eight years in office. He also asked for forgiveness for any shortcomings during his tenure.

As he concluded his speech and took his seat, the entire Council Chamber rose in a standing ovation.

Malam repeatedly pleaded with everyone to stop applauding, but the ovation continued for several minutes.

Seated beside him was the then Senator representing Kaduna Central, and now His Excellency, The Governor of Kaduna State
Senator Uba Sani, whom Malam warmly acknowledged and wished well in the task that lay ahead.

This was followed by an emotional tribute from H.E Senator Uba Sani. His heartfelt words moved many in the room, including Malam himself.

After the ceremony, Malam quietly left the Council Chamber and returned to his office for a private moment, and prayerful reflection, before receiving family, friends, associates, appointees, staff, and government officials who had come to bid him farewell.

It was during this period that I captured this group photograph a moment that reflected the respect, gratitude, and affection shared by those who had walked the journey with him.

Shortly afterwards, Malam took his final walk out of the office he had occupied for eight years.

Amidst the praise, the applause, and the emotions of the day, he prayed and departed with quiet dignity.

A moment I will never forget. 📸

True leadership is defined by the courage to challenge the status quo, build institutions, and make the difficult decisions required to pave a sustainable path for future generations.
The current legal and political challenges surrounding his continuous detention have sparked widespread concern among well-meaning Nigerians.

True democracy and the collective advancement of our nation thrive strictly on fairness, equity, and an unyielding commitment to the rule of law. When state institutions are perceived to be weaponised to suppress dissenting voices or alter political dynamics, it weakens public confidence in our judicial and democratic systems. Accountability must never be selective, and justice must never be compromised by political calculations.

We must stand united in demanding transparency, fair hearing, and immediate respect for fundamental human rights. Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has spent decades serving this country with fierce corporate efficiency and structural clarity. His legacy is written in the concrete of our modern cities and the minds of thousands of children who received free basic education.

It is time to move past political divisions and allow justice to prevail without interference. We call on the authorities to guarantee a transparent legal process. Free Nasiru El-Rufai and let the principles of fairness guide our great country !

MALLAM NASIR AHMAD EL-RUFAI AND THE DANGER OF EMPTY SECURITY THEATRICS

For years, critics have tried to make Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai the convenient scapegoat for insecurity and killings in Southern Kaduna. These claims have been repeated endlessly, yet they still lack the one thing that matters: clear, verifiable evidence linking him personally to the attacks.

During his time as Governor of Kaduna State (2015–2023), El-Rufai took a firm and consistent position. He rejected the payment of ransom, refused to negotiate with bandits and terrorists, and insisted that such concessions only invite more violence. He focused on strengthening security architecture and worked with other northern governors to confront cattle rustling and farmer herder conflicts. Those efforts delivered real progress before the threat mutated into the more sophisticated banditry and terrorism now seen across the North.

That clear eyed approach stands in sharp contrast to the recent initiative by the Northern States Governors’ Forum. On 8 July 2026 in Kaduna, the governors inaugurated the Board of Trustees of the so called Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund. They announced that each of the 19 states and their local governments would contribute 1 billion monthly for one year.

On paper it looks impressive. In reality, it risks becoming another expensive talking shop. After years of meetings, communiqués and unfulfilled resolutions, the North does not need another fund layered with bureaucracy and retired big names. What it needs is the kind of disciplined, no ransom,results focused leadership El-Rufai @elrufai practised not the creation of yet another structure that may absorb billions while ordinary people continue to suffer.

The same governors who now present this Trust Fund as a landmark step have largely continued policies that have not delivered decisive results. The persistence of insecurity under the current approach only confirms what El-Rufai always maintained: this is a complex national crisis, not the failure of one individual. Turning insecurity into political theatre or creating new institutions without hard accountability does not protect lives.

Whether one agrees with every decision El-Rufai made or not, his insistence on evidence, principle and action remains far more serious than the latest regional announcement. Lasting peace in Southern Kaduna and across the North will not come from photo opportunities and monthly contributions that may never translate into real security on the ground. It will come from unity, justice, accountability, and the courage to reject both criminality and empty gestures.

Security should never be politicised or reduced to another committee. The lives of our people are too precious for that.

This petition calls for an independent review of the circumstances surrounding his detention and urges the relevant authorities to uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is served.

My Humble Opinion on the Case Involving Mallam Nasir El-Rufai in Kaduna State High Court, where his bail applications were refused on several occasions.

If I were to respectfully advise the learned Judge presiding over the case involving Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, I would suggest that His Lordship consider recusing himself from further proceedings in the interest of preserving public confidence in the administration of justice.

This view stems from the allegations of bias that the defense has raised. Whether those allegations are ultimately established is a matter for the appropriate judicial authorities. However, once such concerns are credibly raised, the Court should carefully consider whether continuing to preside over the matter may create a reasonable apprehension of bias in the mind of a fair-minded observer. It is a fundamental principle of our legal system that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.

From my observation, the refusal of bail on several occasion, has generated legitimate public concern, particularly where the offenses charged are generally regarded as bailable. While it is trite law that the grant or refusal of bail lies within the discretion of the Court, such discretion is not absolute. It must be exercised judicially and judiciously, taking into account the constitutional presumption of innocence, the nature of the allegations, the severity of the punishment prescribed by law, the likelihood of the defendant attending trial, the possibility of interference with witnesses or investigation, and all other relevant circumstances.

In exercising that discretion, the Court should also consider the personality and standing of the defendant. Mallam Nasir El-Rufai is a former Governor of Kaduna State and a prominent public figure whose identity and place of residence are well known. Unless there is credible evidence that he poses a flight risk, is likely to interfere with witnesses, or may obstruct the course of justice, the reasons for refusing bail should be compelling and clearly articulated. which everyone knows Malam Nasir is not a flight risk or attempt to interfere with the witness as he was the one that brought himself to Nigeria which he was in abroad.

The judiciary remains an independent arm of government and must at all times be seen as free from the influence or control of the Executive or any external authority. Public confidence in the courts depends upon the perception that judicial decisions are based solely on the law and the facts before the Court.

Accordingly, if the defense has formally raised concerns regarding possible bias, it may be prudent for His Lordship, without any admission of wrongdoing, to voluntarily recuse himself and refer the matter to the Honorable Chief Judge for reassignment to another Judge. Such a step would help reinforce public confidence in the impartiality and integrity of the judicial process and eliminate any perception that the proceedings are unfair.

This opinion is expressed with the utmost respect for the Court, the Bench, and the administration of justice. It is offered solely in the spirit of promoting the rule of law, judicial independence, and the constitutional right of every accused person to a fair hearing before an impartial tribunal.

The issue is not whether the learned Judge is actually biased, but whether the circumstances have created a reasonable perception of bias capable of undermining public confidence in the proceedings. Since the credibility of the judiciary rests upon its impartiality, a voluntary recusal and reassignment of the case may better serve the interests of justice, uphold the integrity of the Court, and reassure the public that the defendant will receive a fair and impartial hearing.

This remains my humble opinion as a legal practitioner, a minister in the temple of justice, and a human rights activist.
