Most people mistake the news they see in newspapers or on television for reality—their reality—even though these reports often concern events with an extremely low statistical probability.
On the other hand, Warren Buffett kept seven newspaper clippings on his office wall, each detailing an extreme event from the history of the stock market.
It is important to understand that, most of the time, not much of significance happens and things proceed normally; yet, there are also those extreme events that change everything.
Those who do not reflect on extreme events may well be unprepared for a catastrophe, simply because they rule out the possibility of it happening in the first place. "Pre-mortem" thinking can be quite helpful—and it does not necessarily have to amount to a "catastrophic" mindset.
Two thoughts from Dashiell Hammett
"My way of learning is to heave a wild and unpredictable monkey-wrench into the machinery."
"The outcome of successful planning always looks like luck to saps."

Jeff Bezos on how to win:
"If you're not looking at your data, your competitors are going to beat you. But if you're only looking at your data, you also will not win."
If you feel lost, get more specific.
Why do you feel lost?
1. No target - can't say what you're moving toward.
2. No feedback - can't tell if today was a win.
3. No next action - can't name the next step.
4. Too many open options - nothing chosen, so nothing compounds.
The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.
