Armenians begin their Christmas celebrations on the evening of January 5, with a special liturgy called Chragaluits (Burning of the Lamps). During this service, believers light candles in church and take the flame home, symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Magi to Christ.
After the liturgy, the faithful greet one another with the traditional proclamation:
“Christ is born and revealed! Blessed is the revelation of Christ!”
On the morning of January 6, families gather to attend the Christmas Divine Liturgy and partake in Holy Communion. Following the service, the Armenian Apostolic Church holds the “Blessing of the Water” ceremony, commemorating Christ’s baptism in the Jordan River.
These traditions reflect both the joy of Christ’s birth and the spiritual significance of His baptism.

Summary:
• Numbers: There are 23 confirmed Armenian hostages in Azerbaijan: 6 civilian captives, 9 prisoners of war, and 8 political prisoners. Of these, 7 have already been convicted in sham trials and are serving their unjust “sentences,” while 16 are currently undergoing sham trials on various baseless charges.
• Terminology: In reality, the terms “hostage” and “captive” can be applied to all of them. “Hostage,” because the Aliyev regime demands various concessions from Armenia and potential mediators for their release, and “captive,” because they were all imprisoned as a result of and in the context of the conflict, due to being on the opposing side. However, as noted above, they are divided into three status-based subgroups: civilian captives, prisoners of war, and political prisoners.
• Other statuses: As a result of Azerbaijani aggressions from 2020 to 2023, there are about 80 enforced disappeared persons whose capture is proven by indisputable evidence, but whose detention Azerbaijan does not acknowledge. There are also more than 200 missing persons, though the exact number is unclear, as state bodies, the Red Cross, and the human rights community present different figures. These numbers do not include those who went missing or were enforced disappeared in the 1990s.
