Why did I create this account? I am fascinated by the pressure (in-game + travel) demands on the top college basketball refs -- Roger Ayers is the poster child for this w/ his crazy schedule. And I feel like this is an under-covered aspect of college basketball, so here we are.
Roger Ayers is one of college basketball's top referees. He spoke for the first time at length about his controversial encounter with Dan Hurley last March. He is eager to put the controversy behind him. My story for Hoops HQ @hhqsports

Maybe I should setup the Rainey Ref Tracker account on here for when you’re working bigtime games in a few years 😁
MSG is the site of next season’s East Regional, so they get an Elite 8 practice game in the same site that they hope to play at in late March.
(Just like they did with the Michigan game in DC last season. Although the Elite 8 vs UConn didn’t work out for them.)
Duke announces a multi-year agreement with Amazon, including three high-profile nonconference games this season:
Nov. 25 vs. UConn in Las Vegas
Dec. 21 vs. Michigan in MSG
Feb. 20 vs. Gonzaga in Detroit (the site of this season’s Final Four)
Dan Hurley on the officiating 👀
“It’s hard to ref that game. We both played so hard… If I could have those three guys ref every game the rest of my career, I would sleep well at night.”
“Gene any thoughts on the call”
Gene: “You could call this or not call this, up in the air”
Call made
Gene: “Clear obviously right call by the officials”
“Thanks Gene”
Good time to remind people online that some teams foul more than others and one team having more fouls called doesn’t make it a “rigged” game
Especially when one team is sub 250 in foul rate and the other is like 45th
People are VERY mad about the refs
Yes there’s a FT discrepancy & Michigan scoring so much from there but there’s a reason for that lol. I don’t think refs are a huge issue but maybe I’m wrong 🤷♂️
No NIT or CBC for Roger, so his season is officially over at 114 games worked. Will have some final season stats for Roger sometime this week. Enjoy the title game tomorrow, everyone!
@RefObserver17 Lots of negative comments about the officials. Full disclosure I missed most of the game but I was just reacting to many of the comments I saw 🤷🏼♂️
