Tom Heaton is nearly 40 years old. He has barely played for Manchester United in years. And they just gave him another contract. There is a very good reason for that.
Most fans see a third choice goalkeeper collecting wages and wonder why- especially because they rarely play games.
I hope you know that that UEFA Champions League squad registration rules require clubs to include a minimum number of association-trained and club-trained players on their list.
A club-trained player is one who spent at least three years at the club between the ages of 15 and 21. Heaton came through United's academy and he returned in 2021 so he qualifies.
In a squad registration that demands those spots be filled, a homegrown goalkeeper who costs relatively little and asks for nothing except professionalism is genuinely valuable.
He is fulfilling a regulatory requirement that would otherwise need to be solved another way. Because he’s there, there is room for an extra foreigner in the squad.
Now, all of that sounds nice. However, his off-pitch contribution to the team is invaluable.
Casemiro described Heaton as indispensable. Not because of his saves but because of his presence. Elite squads need people who set the standard in training every single day without the reward of starting on Saturdays.
People who mentor younger players, maintain the culture of the dressing room and absorb pressure without complaint. That is an incredibly rare quality and it has almost nothing to do with age or ability between the posts.
Third choice goalkeepers at big clubs are also emergency insurance. If Senne Lammens and Altay Bayindir are both unavailable simultaneously United need someone who can step in without the club going into crisis. Heaton has done it before. He will do it again if needed.
The contract extension is not sentiment. It is not loyalty for loyalty's sake. It is a club recognising that some of the most important players in a squad are the ones the cameras never focus on.

@jayhemz One of the things I have learnt in IT is to try to understand the unlying concepts and mechanics behind some technologies, understand core system operations, example an Operating system, the tech behind OS is so vast and complex, understanding how it works from file type systems
@tobyasky I was talking about the instant Impact he had at Villa, solid coach
Same thing for Howe when he joined Newcastle
Both taking their teams from struggling positions to a good place within a year
@commando_skiipz There's somethings I do on excel with the help of AI, I know that if I had to figure these things out on my own
I will lose my mind and manually input my data in excel
Footballers live a very boring life. It’s why many of them love to have their families and friends around. It’s a lonely world outside the game.
You go to training, head back home to your big, probably empty apartment, a video game console and your phone. There’s a lot of time to take in negative vibes. That’s why some of them go to social media. Imagine being on social media when you’ve just had a stinker by your own assessment.
They have so much time. And that could be dangerous.
For those who are not married, are without friends, are probably foreign and new to the country, they go home to that loneliness. When they are injured with all of these, they’re unable to do the one thing that brings life to them. It’s why some footballers spend a long time in the gym.
When footballers don’t play, they need another life to cope. If you’re playing for an elite team, it’s better. You’re travelling often, and will often be with your teammates on those trips. You don’t have much time for other stuff. When you’re not, it’s much harder. You travel sometimes when you have days off. If you don’t, you go out with friends to places you don’t want to be identified.
This is why some of them drink. They find ways to cope. Others go to school. They spend that spare time studying. Earning degrees. Some spend it doing their hobbies. Iwobi, Onana, Depay, Diaz all sing. Some spend those times doing community-based stuff.
Some footballers research about their fascinations, read books about their next steps after football, build friendships outside the game for when they retire.
You see why South Americans have big families around? It’s important they do it to keep their heads in a good place.
A European may not be minded to have a big family around because it’s not their lifestyle but when you come from Africa and South America, you’re likely going to do better if you have more familiar faces around. The people who can help you when you lose games. People who’ll lift your spirit when the mood is down.
Now imagine an African or South American kid who’s moved to an eastern European country during winter, isn’t playing, has lost form or is injured. It’ll take the club paying extra attention to them.
It’s why clubs have Player Care and even that may not be enough sometimes. We watch the game but a lot happens behind the scenes.

@hedrees_ayinde Exactly none has time to actively monitor what employees use their PCs to, but there systems in place to restrict unauthorised use based on the company's policy
Upgraded multiple PCs to Windows 11 25H2 after remote deployment failed — had to go manual. Fixed update errors by resizing EFI partitions, handled some IT asset management, and now it’s past midnight editing a video due tomorrow 😂
Ayo, you should rest
@Hakeem_Onitolo A good example is Messi free kick ability, early in his career, he wasn't a good FK taker and later learnt how about the trained and practice free kicks over the years which made him a lethal free kick taker
Most of his FK goals were scored in the later stage of his career
I’ll use this to explain something..
So this is the average 9ja home growing up…
Boys and girls having to grow up not hugging their parents/siblings.. We just didn’t get to visibly see showing of love/compassion at home even though we could k!ll for our brothers and sisters.. But to verbally say “I love you” to them and in some cases HUG THEM genuinely na problem.
I’ll cite example from a Yoruba Boy angle…
The typical Yoruba home.. You prostrate for your parents.. And you’re mandated to call your older ones ‘Boda/Aunty’.. And of course, your younger ones get to call you that too.
So that line for hugging don first blur by virtue of what we uphold.
I’m driving somewhere.. stay with me.
Now imagine both genders growing from that in the average Nigerian home.. Then later in life, one gender is just magically expected to be ‘romantic’ in a western way
Like yo! The average omo boy literally LEARNT how to give warm hugs and enjoy it as adults bro!!!
How do we magically go from that to designing the room with rose petals and buying flowers/scented candles and all ?
Where on earth in our reality did that depict love growing up ?
The trait/gesture is COMPLETELY alien to us
You don’t get it… I’ve never touched a ‘rose petal’ in my entire life bruh.. Where I wan see am ?
Scented flower ?… Ki lo’n je be ???
We’d be trying to learn these things as adults then they’ll still go ahead and call it “bare minimum” just coz they see it online from people creating content every other time and they read it on wattpad
You see how the average 9ja Man would rather take you to go and eat and/or send you money than design one nonsense room with petals ?
It’s a matter of familiar and unfamiliar gestures.
That whole thing feels like bullsh!t to him… And we lowkey know it doesn’t mean much to you Ladies too.. But westernization + seeking validation + social media pepper-them ti fe ba aye yin je.
Let me extend it a little..
You think the average bobo is freaked about planning proposals, bridal shower, white wedding, gender reveal and all those foreign dubs ?
lol mchew!!
I’ll end on this note..
Ask yourself how EVERYTHING our fathers wanted and expected from our mothers as wives are still the same thing modern Men want from their Women(wives).
But the things our mothers wanted from our Fathers, modern Women are expecting x100 from modern Men.
One-sided modernization isonu.
