An overwhelming walk through the history of India’s energy journey.
Visiting the birthplace of India’s energy exploration and refining preserved at Digboi Centenary Museum at the historic Digboi Refinery in Assam.
This is where India’s first commercial well “Discovery Well No.1” was spudded in October 1889 by Assam Railways and Trading Company Limited, and production started a year later in November 1890 marking India's first commercial oil success with a production of 200 gallons per day.
Often referred to as the ‘Gangotri of the Indian Oil Industry,’ the world’s second oldest refinery at Digboi continues to attract historians, students, and energy professionals from across the country who gain precious insight from the meticulously preserved original equipment, archival records, and historical narratives dating back to the refinery’s establishment in 1901.
Today, as we conquer deep seas, towering mountains and scorching deserts to strengthen India’s energy Exploration and Production efforts and gain momentum as we progress towards energy security, self-sufficiency and green transition under the visionary leadership of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji, these historic artefacts are a reminder of the distance we have now covered.

Greetings to the exponents & practitioners of #Yoga on the occasion of International Day of Yoga. The ancient Indian practice of well-being & fitness, Yoga has been a part of India’s civilisational values and traditions for centuries. Originating in ancient India, yoga is deeply rooted in Bhartiya wisdom and philosophical traditions that emphasize a holistic way of life that nurtures harmony between the body, mind, and spirit.
Due to the untiring efforts of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji during the last many years, Yoga has further transcended geographical and cultural boundaries to become an even greater global movement embraced by millions across the world and is recognised among one of Bharat’s most wholesome cultural imports to the world.

Welcomed the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Ji in my office today.
During discussions with the distinguished Communication and Electronic Warfare specialist, I also recollected my days as JS Navy, among other responsibilities, when I was posted with the Ministry of Defence from 1994 to 1997.
We also discussed ways to further strengthen the existing association between @PetroleumMin and Indian Navy HQ.

When disaster strikes, India does not merely respond — India reassures!
In the wake of the Venezuela earthquake, India’s #OperationAmistad shows humanitarian aid and disaster response as a true global public good. With the deployment of the Aarogya Maitri Cube under indigenous #ProjectBHISHM — Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita and Maitri, India is carrying advanced trauma care, emergency medical support, ICU capability and a field-hospital ecosystem to where it is needed most — because in a disaster, speed, preparedness and the right capability can decide life or death.
This is the same spirit India helped place at the heart of the #G20 : using Disaster Risk Reduction and Early Action to shift the world from being purely reactive and response-centric to becoming proactive, preparedness-driven and development-focused. From Venezuela today to the Türkiye earthquake earlier, and from COVID solidarity to the larger ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, this is India as Vishwamitra — swift in action, humane in spirit, and guided by sauhardya, the civilisational conviction that when humanity suffers, borders and politics must fall silent.
Even as the world faced one of the worst energy crises and disrupted supply chains, India under the leadership of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji effectively shielded the energy consumers from any negative impact. Despite doomsday predictions by the naysayers, our people, particularly those on the margins, were insulated and protected.
The instinct of PM Modi Ji, to safeguard Indian consumers, has held through almost four months of the largest energy disruption in modern history.
This was possible only because the ground had been prepared in the years before. The widening of our crude basket from 27 countries to 41, the doubling of our import terminals, and the pipelines and reserves built across a decade under Modi were not abstractions when the strait finally closed; they were the very reason the lights stayed on.
A crisis of this magnitude shows a country its real mettle. India endured the closure of Hormuz and supplied itself through it without any shortages anywhere in the country. Today the stocks are full, the pumps are open, and the Indian consumer has paid less for energy through this crisis than any consumer in the world.
👍A very courageous and bold central excise cut of ₹10 a litre in March absorbed substantial part of the price shock.
👍Cooking gas going to homes was protected in full and digital authentication code was made mandatory to prevent diversion of this precious supply by black marketers.
👍25 days and 45 days limit was imposed so that every citizen gets cylinders when he needs it but no one is able to hoard cylinders.
👍LPG Control Order was passed on 8 March, which mandated all refineries to divert all their C3-C4 carbon streams to maximise LPG production.
👍Refineries that had never made cooking gas were reconfigured within a few days and production was raised from 35 TMT a day to 54 TMT a day.
👍Over 12 Indian LPG vessels were quietly moved out of Hormuz without paying any tolls.
👍Vessels were sent even as cargoes were being secured from the US, inside Hormuz to get new cargos and fresh supply lines were opened with several countries such as Algeria, Japan and Canada.
👍Entire government came together to enable shift to piped gas connections through faster municipal permissions.
A crisis of this magnitude shows a country its real mettle. When the history of this conflict comes to be written, one line deserves to survive: the largest energy shock in living memory reached our shores and 150 crore Indian citizens were shielded.

Competitor, adversary, partner: China, Russia and India at G7
My latest think piece in the @SundayGuardian explores what the G7 reveals about the state of the Western democratic alliance, its dialectical relationship with China, its inimical one with Russia, and how India is positioned—and positions itself—in this evolving equation.
“Russia, they name as a threat. China they call a strategic competitor.” India, by contrast, is the power the #G7 increasingly needs in the room. From critical minerals and supply chains to AI, terrorism, energy security and the Global South, PM @narendramodi ji's message at #Évian captured the moment: the world’s salvation lies “not in protectionism but in partnership, not in uncertainty but in shared prosperity.” The deeper movement is not towards a new multipolarity, but a return to a many-centred world—one in which India must help shape the language, rules and balance of power.

Another Jan Andolan takes shape!
In the 135th edition of the unique #MannKiBaat program today, PM Sh @narendramodi Ji thanked the citizens for wholeheartedly responding to his appeal to curtail the use of petrol and diesel, using public transport where possible, using carpooling, and curtailing gold purchases.
Measures such as these are helping the nation conserve energy, saving on the energy import bill and overcoming the challenges arising out of the military conflict, involving many energy producing nations, that has impacted global supply chains.
The huge support from the citizens to PM’s clarion call has also enabled India to maintain a steady flow of energy products at retail outlets and face the difficult phase with minimal price adjustments.

An evening of poetry, reflection and cultural diplomacy at the Brazilian Official Residence in New Delhi, marking the launch of Quatrains in Quarantine by Manish Chand. Heartiest congratulations to Manish on this evocative collection, born from the silences, anxieties and awakenings of the Covid years.
Centred on the theme “Poetry and Literature in Times of Crises and Conflicts”, the discussion reminded us that literature is not an escape from difficult times, but a way of bearing witness to them. In moments of grief, isolation, pandemic and uncertainty, poetry gives language to what the heart struggles to hold.
As I shared during the discussion, poetry cannot prevent crises, but it prevents suffering from becoming mute. It gives shape to grief when ordinary language fails, transforms pain into reflection, and reminds us that even in our darkest moments, faith, hope, love, imagination and the present moment remain our greatest sources of resilience.
The evening brought together diplomats, authors, academics and lovers of literature in a thoughtful conversation on how words can heal, connect and illuminate. From the wounds of Covid to the wider challenges of our age, the discussion underlined the enduring power of poetry to transform suffering into reflection, silence into meaning and despair into renewal.
Beyond the book launch, it was also a celebration of cultural dialogue and people-to-people ties. Literature, much like diplomacy, builds bridges across nations, languages and memories—reminding us that even in divided times, shared stories can bring us closer.
My sincere appreciation to Ambassador Kenneth da Nóbrega and the Embassy of Brazil for hosting such a memorable evening of ideas, literature and friendship.

Witnessed the signing of a Technical Services Contract between India’s PSU energy Maharatna @ONGC_ and global energy major @bp_India to enhance production from fields in Western Offshore Basin.
The agreement marks a significant expansion of the ONGC-bp collaboration from Mumbai High to the fields in the Western Offshore Basin. It will facilitate a wider deployment of advanced technologies, global technical expertise and best-in-class operating practices across some of India’s most important mature hydrocarbon assets.
Collaborations such as these will provide momentum to India’s efforts to enhance domestic production of hydrocarbons as we progress towards reducing our import bills and achieving energy self-sufficiency under the leadership of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji.
Today’s agreement builds on the Technical Services Contract signed by ONGC and bp for Mumbai High in February 2025. During the first year of collaboration, the two companies successfully moderated production decline and delivered growth through optimization of existing wells, enhanced surveillance and focused reservoir, well and facility-management initiatives.

Today is the day to acknowledge the unrecognised efforts of women in the field of diplomacy. June 24th was declared as the International Day of Women in Diplomacy by the United Nations General Assembly at its 76th session in 2022.
The Emergency imposed on 25 June 1975 remains one of the darkest assaults on India’s democratic values.
On #SamvidhanHatyaDiwas many of us will recall how for 21 long months, the world’s largest democracy was suffocated by those who sought personal survival. Dissent became a crime, criticism invited persecution, and the Constitution was treated as an inconvenience rather than a sacred covenant with the people.
The values enshrined in the Constitution were ruthlessly crushed, human rights and civil liberties were curtailed, democratic institutions were subverted, judiciary was undermined, media and free speech was suppressed, films were banned and artistes were harassed.
This was a period that unleashed a massive human tragedy for citizens. From the brutality of forced mass sterilisations and violent slum demolitions to systemic police torture and an airtight censorship blackout, the machinery of the state was weaponised against its own people. Everyday lives were fractured as journalists, and political leaders were thrown into prisons without trials or charges.

On 23 June 2025, I led a delegation comprising senior leaders and prominent Sikh legislators of India to Ahakista Memorial in Cork, Ireland to pay tribute to the 329 innocent victims on the 40th anniversary of the dastardly mid air bombing of Air India Kanishka Flight 182 in 1985. This reprehensible bombing remains one of the most heinous acts of aviation terror committed against India. Actions anchored in such extremism have no place in a sane & civilised world.
At the solemn ceremony in Cork, we joined the Irish Prime Minister HE @MichealMartinTD, Canadian Minister of Public Safety HE Gary Anandasangaree @gary_srp, many members of the victims’ families and local residents.
Apart from emergency assistance in identifying the bodies and locating and collecting the debris, the spirit with which the people of Ahakista and the nearby areas rose to the occasion in solidarity with the families of the victims is an exemplary tale of humaneness and compassion.
