Today, @SenBlumenthal and I introduced the Save the Kurds Act.

I believe that there is strong bipartisan support for the idea of protecting the Kurds in Syria and beyond because they have been such a reliable ally to the United States. The SDF – with a large Kurdish element – took the brunt of the fight to defeat ISIS in President Trump’s first term.

I realize Syria is complicated culturally, ethnically and politically. However, attacking the Kurds greatly diminishes the United States’ standing and will hinder Syria’s ability to grow as a country.

To those countries or groups who believe it is open season on the Kurds in Syria without consequence, you will be sadly mistaken.

“Raqqa,” Mohammed responded. “Kurdish or Arab?” the gunman asked. “Kurds, but we don’t belong to any armed or political party,” Mohammed replied.

“Kill all the adults,” the commander shouted. The family tried to get out of the vehicle to plead for their lives. Mohammed was immediately shot in the head by one of the gunmen.

The US & int’l community must press for Syrian Government to stop attacks and to stay out of Kurdish majority areas also filled with Christian, Yazidis, and other minorities at risk of ethnic cleansing.

There is a way to integrate NE Syria into the Syrian Government by preserving their local security and governance. That would protect these communities and give Syria a better chance of peace and stability.

The attacks against me today are not simply a disagreement or political criticism but the result of false narratives the Islamic Republic and its network of supporters - from organized bots to entities affiliated with the opposition - have created to destroy the truth and silence voices. I have decided to debunk these narratives, not to defend myself, but to defend the truth.

I spent over 14 years of my life as a correspondent for VOA and over 4 years as a field reporter for Radio Farda. I was among the founders of media amplifying the voices of the people of the region and Iran, including a 24-hour TV and an online news network. The cost of this path has not been low. The IRGC has repeatedly tried to assassinate me; the FBI has warned of terrorist threats against my life at least three times. These are not claims, they are facts documented in US security files.

I have said it many times and I will say it again, I believe in a unified Iran. Separatism and totalitarianism are two sides of the same coin. Both come from a culture of exclusion and hatred, both endanger Iran’s future. No nation has ever been liberated by eliminating its children.

I am neither a spokesman for the opposition nor its enemy. I only stand by the truth, the truth that is written every day in the streets of Iran with blood and courage. My commitment is neither to figures nor to flags, but to the people of Iran, who silently but steadfastly fight for freedom and human dignity.

Whoever knowingly or unknowingly tries to divert attention from these brave people - especially for fame, personal gain and influence - is unwittingly serving the IR’s repression machine. This deviation and division is what the regime wants.

Today, more than ever, is the time to choose. Either we stand by the people inside Iran or we turn our backs on their courage with silence and diversion. My choice is to stand by the people of Iran.

من بارها گفته‌ام و باز هم می‌گویم: به ایران یکپارچه باور دارم. تجزیه‌طلبی و تمامیت‌خواهی، دو روی یک سکه‌اند؛ هر دو از دل فرهنگ حذف، نفرت و انحصار بیرون می‌آیند و هر دو آینده ایران را به خطر می‌اندازند. هیچ ملتی با حذف فرزندانش آزاد نشده است.

من نه سخنگوی اپوزیسیونم و نه دشمن آن. من تنها در کنار حقیقت ایستاده‌ام؛ حقیقتی که هر روز در خیابان‌های ایران با خون، زندان، فقر و شجاعت نوشته می‌شود. تعهدم نه به چهره‌هاست و نه به پرچم‌ها، بلکه به مردم ایران است؛ مردمی که بی‌صدا اما استوار، برای آزادی و کرامت انسانی می‌جنگند.

هر کسی که آگاهانه یا ناآگاهانه تلاش می‌کند توجه را از این مردم شجاع منحرف کند ـ به‌ویژه آنان که در خارج از ایران به دنبال شهرت، موج سواری و منافع شخصی‌اند ـ ناخواسته به ماشین سرکوب جمهوری اسلامی خدمت می‌کند. این انحراف، این تفرقه و این حاشیه‌سازی، همان چیزی است که رژیم می‌خواهد.

امروز بیش از هر زمان دیگری، زمان انتخاب است. یا در کنار مردم داخل ایران می‌ایستیم، یا با سکوت و حاشیه‌سازی، پشت به شجاعت آنان می‌کنیم. من انتخابم را کرده‌ام: ایستادن کنار مردم ایران.
