@TheTricksterVT Is it shitty? Absolutely. That's how people protect their revenue streams. If Artist X charges you $5000 for a project and gives you the source, nothing stops you from going to bid other artists to pay 20% of that next time. Their work continues to drive your profit without them.

@TheTricksterVT You as a business can buy a website from a company, but that doesn't necessarily mean you get the website source code. You have to discuss and price in the full ownership of the software. Same goes for anything else, and just like with a lot of bespoke apps, you pay for updates

If I'm building PCs for a company, they're paying 30-50% more. They're profiting off of that machine, this is how capitalism works

@bsoemo @1337hero @plex Yeah but they paywalled a core feature that's always existed just because they can (like they did with hardware transcode). You don't know about the alternatives or don't care about them because your setup works... till it doesn't or it starts asking you for money

@snoooopy8382 @1337hero @plex why should you even have to do this shit? You should be able to just connect to your stuff (if you're willing to expose your plex server to the internet). It sucks because you can't do things like use android auto while using a vpn app, so this disables the option anyway

@1337hero @plex I swapped to jellyfin once Plex locked hardware transcoding behind a paywall also. Jellyfin + jellyseerr is such a powerful combo, I'm never going back
