We are in it again... Christian right and the "conservatives" are attacking popular culture just because the woke have been weakened.

I'm old enough to remember the 1980s- 1990s. The Satanic Panic, the moral panic of Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, music, and even Pokemon.

But at the center... public enemy number 1 of the Christian right and the conservatives was Marilyn Manson. The moral panic drove a rise in nihilism in the 1990s, where teenagers and the youth at the time- the late genX and early millennials were attacked for the pop culture that they engaged with... creating that first generational culture gap... a rift... an early warning sign of things to come.

I was, and still am, a huge fan of old-school metal and transgressive music. Marilyn Manson was one that I listened to often in high school along with Rob Zombie, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, and many others. My friend group's obsession with metal and alt culture at the time was a rebellion against the conservatives and Christians who were relentlessly critical of it.

Then the Columbine school shooting happened.

The moral panic afterwards was insane. Protests against Marilyn Manson started, and his career was damaged to the point that he never reached the levels he did in 1998, despite still making music even today. He was the public scapegoat, and anyone listening to his music or wearing his shirts at school was considered dangerous.

Venues and cities moved to block his performances, and the media coverage was completely one-sided. They also blamed games like Doom and the violence in movies and TV shows. But it's the one who they could name: Marilyn Manson, who they "cancelled".

I knew it was bullshit.
My friends knew it was bullshit.
It was cancel culture, before it even became a thing.
And it was my generation that they labeled as the "problem".

Then in the 2000's the progressive roots stretching back from the 1960's in academia simmered in the relative lack of any predominant culture in that decade. It was fragmented, and the post 9/11 war sustained public attention at the time, allowing the leftists to perfect their "ideological attack" on the wider world.

In 2011, Occupy Wall Street happened, and what started as a class struggle quickly morphed into identity politics as it shifted from academia into the wider culture.

What followed after that was the cultural takeover by the leftists, progressives, that culminated in the GamerGate 1.0 in 2014, and then the Woke 1.0 in 2021... over a decade of absolute insanity.

... and now we are here again.
Woke is weakened, not defeated.
The same usual suspects- the Christian right, the conservatives are being the fun police, creating moral panic out of nothing, laying the ground for yet another decade of cultural decay... paving the way for Woke 2.0 to come into full force... policing problematic content in anime, "gooner" materials, fandoms.

... and the cycle turns yet again.
