In 2015, construction work in Borujerd, Iran, unexpectedly uncovered an ancient water system hidden beneath the city’s historic citadel.
What archaeologists found was surprisingly sophisticated: a network of clay pipes and large pottery vessels designed to move, distribute and help clean the water.
The vessels appear to have acted as settling points, allowing mud and sediment to drop out of the water while reducing the risk of the pipes becoming blocked.
Even more fascinating, the exact age of the system was not immediately known when it was discovered.
More than just an ancient water pipe system—it was a clever piece of hydraulic engineering hidden beneath the city for centuries.
