1 year lecturer contract. “We encourage female applicants who are currently underrepresented”- guess not the females who have children +rent/mortgages to pay or anyone with mental health issues for whom instability is an extra curse. The way to an academic career seems impossible
As @EilidhABHall says in her blog, 'academic life makes us think that scholarly work is the only work that matters. But we do work, waged and unwaged, that matters all the time. There are so many other places outside of HEIs where we can use what we’ve learned.'
@EilidhABHall is our latest guest on the ChangeUp podcast discussing her role within the UK civil service Fast Stream. This podcast will be of help to anyone currently navigating or considering an application to the Fast Stream: https://t.co/T7byfTAZTc
So whether you are interested in the Fast Stream application process, or insights from the job itself, @EilidhABHall's diverse experience both in and out of academia is insightful. She is also still researching and writing - her book is out next year! 🎉
Really interesting series of podcasts from @PrecarityProj, relevant to Americanists but also any PhDs/postgrads thinking about transferable skills for #altac & careers within academia. #AcademicChatter
Mark discusses how PhD students' experience of their institutions can translate into these roles, and how he adapted his CV to showcase key skills from the PhD process. Thanks again to Mark for joining us! Let us know what you think, and if you have any questions or ideas.
Got the beginning of semester blues? Join us for the latest ChangeUp podcast with @markwalmsley88 via https://t.co/T7byfTAZTc. Mark has advice about admin roles PhD students can apply for (helpful cash and experience), as well as his current role in widening participation (WP)
Mark's administrative experience has opened up varied career options within the university, and roles such as his may be more common in the future, combining academic teaching and expertise with WP issues, admin functions, but offering more stability than precarious teaching gigs
Mark encourages current PhD students to take advantage of software training and internal paid admin positions to develop administrative skills that improve flexibility and employability. We're looking forward to discussing his career on the podcast, so drop us a line with any qs!
Pleased to announce our second guest blog post is now live! @markwalmsley88 discusses his role as a widening participation officer @uniofeastanglia, following a PhD in American History from Leeds. Podcast will follow soon! Read Mark's blog at https://t.co/T7byfTAZTc
