If anyone is reading an email from the senior leadership team of their university that includes a line similar to 'compulsory redundancies remain a last resort for the University and will be avoided wherever possible' - this is your reminder to join a union. @ucu@ucuedinburgh
So proud to share this - Jo's strategies for all of our @ucu sectors are clear, realistic and yet still push the boundaries. She fully understands the issues in FE and how we need to build and organise to win. Grady and @OnlyDavidHunter would be a formidable team 💪💜 #Grady4GS
@ejwestuk I need to convince Nat that Rufus wouldn't be a total terror if we got chickens. His current approach to anything with feathers is not helping me at the moment, although marginally better than if I was aksing to keep squirrels.
Big day tomorrow at UEA.
We need as many of you to come out for our first local strike day as we fight to avoid compulsory redundancies.
If they come for one of us, they come for all of us.
Pickets from 8:00
Rally @ Eaton Park 11:30
Post-picket social @TheGardenHouse5
Originally published in April, but still holds true today as the University makes further announcements this week about compulsory redundancies. We can and must do better as a sector. No-one wins from the current regime. HE is not, and shouldn't be run as, a business.
As lecturers join medical staff, rail and postal workers, teachers and many others in striking for inflation-proof pay rises, managers at UEA have responded with sackings, reports @markwalmsley88. https://t.co/klrPoTpzxT
@_canndo A no. of folks before me passed with no corrections. When I got minor deficiencies it made me feel like I'd failed. Took me ages before I could look at my thesis again, but when I did it was less than a week's work. Most of the language is archaic and needs to go.
"Food banks are not part of the welfare state, they are the symbol that the welfare state is failing [...] Vulnerable people who are forced to rely on the goodness of others to do something as basic as eat is barbaric"
It doesn't have to be like this.
I apparently no longer work for a living wage employer. I genuinely can't believe they went through with this. The continuing cruelty of this whole mess is really awful. UEA can and should do better. Solidarity with colleagues affected. This isn't the end of this. #SaveUEA
Hey #UEA, you pay 67 staff more than £100K per year, but say you can't afford to pay 300 other employees the real terms living wage? That's not just disappointing; it's outrageous. Stop cutting corners on fair wages and start valuing all of your hard-working employees!
#SaveUEA
The branch notes the resignation of the VC, David Richardson, but also notes that his departure has done nothing to lessen the potential impact of institutional mismanagement on the lives of members. The proposed cuts continue, cuts that will irrevocably change the UEA we love 1/
Massive thanks to @labourlewis for raising this today. We look forward to working on a solution that saves jobs and protects UEA's place as an important cultural, educational, and financial hub within the region. We're stronger together and we will find a positive way forwards.
There are two ways to win an election, compromise to meet the electorate where (you think) they are, or articulate a vision that brings people to you. It's sad that Labour have retreated back to being a party that believes progressive, left-wing ideas aren't worth voting for 4/4
V. good article that articulates why I and many others left the party. Either they want to be Tories, but a bit nicer, or they think it's "good politics" to hoodwink a centre-right electorate instead of encouraging that electorate to support left/centre-left policies 1/
Obviously there was a lot wrong with Corbynism, but few of us will forget the energising wave that came with a leadership that attempted to convince people that our ideas could change lives, rather than retreating behind bland phrases that appeal to a centre-right electorate 3/
@StephCopsey "With the instruction to settle comes a stigmatisation of hope. It is seen as not just misplaced but suspect, disqualifying." - Thought this was very good - https://t.co/9iNKTtcDoF
@sayburgin @CivilHumanRight@UofSC_CIC That's awesome Say! UEA doesn't have access to the most recent volumes of that journal unfortunately. Could you send me a copy? I'd love to read it. I don't get to do much history research anymore, but this sounds great!
📣Post-Picket Potluck Picnic reminder!
.@UEA_UCU members remember tomorrow after the pickets at noon we have our picnic @ the Eaton Park Community Centre (by the basketball court & lower car park). We'll bring some food, but bring along a dish/snacks. Children are very welcome!
This is beautiful & shows perfectly the true hurt being caused at the moment. This isn't about losing a job, it's about losing a home. Things like this remind you why we're fighting and why we need to win #DontDestroyUEA#SaveUEA#ucuRISING
