"If you have no knowledge of the cruelty that Chinese serial Chinese cat and kitten torturer, mutilator and murderer, Jack Latiao (real name Xu Zhihui), known for torturing Cowcat which sparked massive controversy in 2023, inflicted on his feline victims, then below, I will describe a segment involving one kitten from the dozens of kittens he publicly tortured to death online:

"He put a kitten into a meat grinder, and after the machine started, the kitten was still alive, struggling and crying out, even trying to crawl upward to escape in a state where its lower body was a bloody mess. He and his wife, Chen Xiaojuan, laughed and said the cat had a tough life, then put the kitten into a microwave to heat it up."

I've never had the courage to click on any of his cat and kitten torture videos. Just these words and images circulating on the internet have already caused immense psychological discomfort for me and many others.

What we find most unbearable isn't just the two words "death." It's that a living being, when suffering pain, can feel the hurt, knows fear, knows to run away—it feels terror too.

In that moment when it desperately clawed upward, it had no idea why humans were treating it this way.

Does torturing cats and dogs really only harm cats and dogs?

Of course, the first to suffer is the animal.

But when the abuse is deliberately filmed, spread, and flaunted—even turned into traffic and business for some people—the ones repeatedly tormented also include the conscience, tolerance, and sense of security of countless ordinary people on the other side of the screen.

There's always someone asking: "Isn't it just a cat, a dog? Why does it upset so many people this much?"

But it's precisely because they can't speak, can't call the police, and don't know how to seek help from society that we feel this way.

A vulnerable life’s trust in humans shouldn’t become the easiest weakness for people to exploit in harming it. And such harm shouldn’t be replicated thousands of times over the internet, forcing countless people originally unrelated to the incident to bear the pain it creates together.

When news suddenly spread online these past two days about "Jack La Tiao and his family being stabbed—one dead, one injured, with the attacker, a girl, jumping to her death on the spot," my first reaction wasn’t joy. If the rumored details are ultimately confirmed, what we’re facing is no longer just an animal abuse case.

It’s an issue of animal protection that, amid long-accumulated anger and helplessness, has finally evolved into the most primal violence between people. The rumor goes that the attacker initially sought to gather real information on Jack La Tiao and ended up watching a ton of his cat abuse videos out of necessity, which drove her to schizophrenia; she then lay low for half a year, waiting near Jack La Tiao’s home until she found the chance to stab him.

This is the most heartbreaking part.

What we’ve always hoped for isn’t for someone to take up a knife and avenge little dog Wang Wang or those cats and dogs cruelly tortured to death.

What we need is for there to already be a clear institutional baseline in place in China—before the next kitten is stuffed into a machine, before the next puppy is abused to death on the street.

Letting abusers know what they can’t do and what consequences they’ll face if they do; letting ordinary people know where to report abuse when they see it and how the law will handle it;
Letting pet owners know what penalties they’ll face for abandoning animals or failing to care for them properly;
And letting those consumed by rage know: We can seek justice without picking up a knife.

A truly mature society shouldn’t rely on an ordinary person ruining their entire life to deliver justice for a speechless little animal.

Wang Wang doesn’t need revenge.
Those abused kittens and puppies don’t need a “hero” either—they need the protection of the law.

My gut reaction was one of uncontrollable sympathy and admiration for that girl who stabbed Jack La Tiao and gave her own life for it, even though, rationally and emotionally, I shouldn’t feel this way. In the afterlife where she is now, have those kittens and puppies once hurt by bad people happily reunited with her? Has she brought word from the human world, telling them that so many brothers and sisters ache for their suffering and are fighting for them? After all, before she stabbed him, thanks to the tireless efforts of many pet lovers, Jack La Tiao ultimately paid only the price of a banned online account and 10 days in detention for his cat abuse.

But I don’t want to call the moment she picked up the knife “heroism.”

Because the world truly worth looking forward to is one where no one needs to sacrifice their life and freedom to become that kind of “hero.”

When the law falls silent, anger shouldn’t turn into vigilante justice.

And the point of our push for animal protection legislation in China has never been just to safeguard cats and dogs.

We’re protecting a society’s most basic compassion for vulnerable lives—and protecting the inner health and peace of those who still hold that compassion."

Yesterday, a young woman lost her life.

Reports claim that she had been deeply affected by the cat-abuse case from three years ago, and eventually chose to confront the alleged abuser through violence.

In 2023, the case involving Xu Zhihui, known online as “Jack Latiao,” shocked the public.

The perpetrator is a food blogger from the Chinese mainland with millions of followers, known as ‘Jack Latiang-Xu Zhihui,’

A cow cat suffered horrific abuse.
Millions were angry.
Millions were heartbroken.
But many felt powerless.

Three years later, the pain had not disappeared.

And now, another tragedy has reportedly happened.

When ordinary people repeatedly witness suffering but feel that the law cannot give them meaningful protection or justice, anger, despair and helplessness can become another tragedy.

The death of an animal is heartbreaking.

The loss of a young human life is devastating.

Good people should never have to sacrifice their lives because the law leaves them feeling powerless.

We do not need more hatred.
We do not need more violence.

We need laws that make cruelty accountable.
We need consequences for abuse.
We need a system people can turn to before desperation takes over.

Remember this girl.

May she rest in peace.

And before another tragedy happens,

虐猫虐狗，虐的真的只是猫狗吗？
首先遭受痛苦的当然是动物。
但当虐待被故意拍摄、传播、炫耀，甚至成为某些人的流量和生意时，被反复折磨的还有屏幕另一端无数普通人的良知、承受力和安全感。

总有人问：“不就是一只猫、一条狗吗？为什么那么多人这么难受？”
可恰恰因为它们不会说话、不会报警，也不知道怎样向这个社会求救，我们才会如此难受。

一个弱小生命对人的信任，不应该成为人伤害它最容易利用的弱点。更不应该让这种伤害经过互联网被成千上万次复制，最后让无数原本与事件毫无关系的人，被迫共同承担它所制造的痛苦。

当这两天网上突然传出“杰克辣条及家人被刺一死一伤，伤人女孩当场跳楼身亡”的消息时，我的第一反应并不是高兴。如果网传情节最终被证实，那么我们面对的已经不再只是一起虐待动物事件。
而是一个关于动物保护的问题，在长期积累的愤怒和无力感中，最终演变成了人与人之间最原始的暴力。网传，伤人者一开始是为了收集杰克辣条的真实信息，不得已看了大量杰克辣条虐猫的视频，最后被刺激到了精神分裂，最终蛰伏半年，到杰克辣条家附近，才找到机会把他刺伤。

这才是最令人悲哀的地方。
我们期待的，从来不是有人替小狗旺旺、替那些被残忍虐杀的猫猫狗狗用刀去复仇。
我们需要的是，下一只小猫被塞进机器之前，下一只小狗被当街虐杀之前，就已经有一道足够明确的制度底线在那里。

让施虐者知道什么不能做，做了需要承担什么责任；
让普通人知道看到虐待应该向哪里举报，法律会怎样处理；
让饲养者知道，抛弃动物，不规范饲养动物，要接受怎样的处罚；
也让那些愤怒到极点的人知道：我们不需要拿起刀，也可以报仇。

一个真正成熟的社会，不应该靠一个普通人毁掉自己的一生，去替一只无法说话的小动物讨回公道。
旺旺需要的不是复仇。
那些被虐待的小猫小狗需要的也不是“英雄”，它们需要的是法律的保护。

我的内心第一感受，是忍不住同情和佩服，那个刺伤杰克辣条又献出自己生命的女孩，尽管于情于理我不该有这样的共情。她此刻所在的天界，那些曾经被坏人伤害过的小猫，小狗，是否已经和她幸福地团聚了？她又是否带去了人间的消息，告诉那些小猫小狗，还有很多很多的哥哥姐姐，都在心疼它们的遭遇，为它们而奔走？毕竟，在她刺伤杰克辣条之前，在众多爱宠人士的努力奔走下，杰克辣条最终也只是为他虐猫行为付出了网络账号封禁和拘留10天的代价。

可我不愿意把她拿起刀的那一刻称为英雄主义。
因为真正值得期待的世界，是根本不需要任何人用自己的生命和自由，去成为这样的“英雄”。

当法律沉默，愤怒不该变成私刑。
而我们推动动物保护立法的意义，也从来不仅仅是保护猫和狗。

2023年4月27日被阜南县公安局依法治安拘留，账号全平台封禁，“阜南好人”称号被取消。
