Earl Cameron with his birthday cake for his 100th birthday. In 2017, he unveiled the plaque celebrating Ira Aldridge as the first black person to run a theatre building. In Coventry. @BBAShakespeare. RIP.
@publicradionerd Just discovered the @BBAShakespeare site. What a brilliant resource. Will certainly help me with my research. Many thanks for creating it.
Casting of Shakespeare's lovers for the book, found a photo of @tanyamoodie's Rosalind & her Orlando, Terence Maynard.
What's different?
This is the only Rosalind & Orlando that isn't a multi-racial couple in mainstream theatre in Britain (except Dash Arts) @BBAShakespeare
Shakespeare Race & Gender in Week 4. We’ll be discussing @ProfKFH‘s work & using the @BBAShakespeare database to research UK theatre industry, Shakespeare, race & gender. We’ll also be looking at @tonderaimunyevu’s play #TheMoors. What a week!
Kemi-Bo Jacobs becomes only the second woman of colour to play Hermione.
The last time, you ask? 1985. Shope Shodinde in a London pub (now @theatre503) https://t.co/EisnQL2T5X @BBAShakespeare
I really think they could've found something a bit more dignified. They could easily have nicked this photo of him as Gower in Pericles at the RSC in 1989. You wouldn't treat the white honorees with a photo like that "comic" pose, @RoyalCentral.
Just heard we lost a giant of black British theatre, TV n film. Malcolm Fredrick, rest in power. U inspired a generation with ur art, wit n spirit.2 unforgettable wisdoms spoken 2 me ‘Don’t b fooled by the illusion of inclusion’. ‘Beware, we have trespassed into a strangers dream
@BBAShakespeare ...That bias is loud and clear here.
The productions are:
Hull Truck in 1990 & two NT education productions in 2007 & 2013-14 (along with its 2014 revival) - so nowhere near its main stages, and the latter with an all-Asian cast.

This picture of both Romeo and Juliet as white actors led me down a rabbit hole.
There are 93 productions in the @BBAShakespeare.
Only TWP of them have had BOTH a non-white Romeo and a non-white Juliet.
The bias against seeing African-Caribbeans or Asians in love...
