Andy Stanley was right that we need to do some unhitching. He was wrong about needing to unhitch from the Old Testament. The Westminster Confession and Catechisms need to be unhitched from presbyterial polity.

@EddyEkofo In a way you could say that all of the theories are correct considering the theological diversity within the Papist institution by way of the monastical orders each essentially being a theological school of thought.

@EddyEkofo Oh I believe you. That's one reason I find it to be a tired angle. I've yet to see any numerically (i.e., switching) meaningful fruit from the debates (informal or formal) that arise from these kinds of claims.

Eh, Presbyterians tend to trot out the succession stuff when talking about polity. More continuity of polity, not so much the tradition wholesale. Though the theological continuity is usually argued along standard Reformed lines in terms of restoring the faith pre-accretions.

Anglicans probably have a more well-rounded succession theory, but it is constantly overshadowed by Henry VIII's approach to detaching from the papist institution. Dutch Reformed...I don't really know how they approach it.

I don't know Lutherans approach it either considering their whole deal has a definite point - Luther. Though based upon Luther's philosophy regarding the liturgy (revise but retain) I suspect they'd hold the Catholic identity much closer to the chest comparable to Anglicans sans-Henry VIII debacle.

Oh I know you aren't. I admire your zeal for baptist theology. My previous experience from when I was still a baptist is a fundamental reason why I am thoroughly uninterested in baptist theology.

I'm not interested in returning to that experience. Whether General or Particular baptist... I had bad experiences in both.
