Four Hazmat Technician firefighters were injured in an explosion at a Lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System (ESS). It is important to note that all incidents involving Lithium Ion batteries are considered Hazmat calls. However, our Hazmat Techs do not currently have the necessary training to effectively deal with this rapidly evolving technology.

According to the report, the HAZMAT team conducted a final entry into the hot zone and determined that the concentrations of HCN and CO near the ESS were below an acceptable threshold. Following the incident action plan, the team proceeded to open the door to the ESS at approximately 20:01 hours. Unfortunately, a deflagration event occurred at around 20:04 hours, resulting in serious injuries to all HAZMAT team members. They were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
