The issue is that is that is was masked for the majority of the last 15 years by a player who’s skillset basically covered multiple cracks at once. A 100 touch a game player that was a high volume dribbler, elite creator, that demanded the ball, calmed the game down, took all pressure off everyone else, and then averaged 1.10+ G/A per game on top of it.
Once you remove him you end up with less ability to keep the ball, no player taking responsibility, no one to calm the game down, no creativity, no goal threat. Loads of issues at once.
But there’s zero excuses for those 3. It’s not like they played well individually but were let down by the collective. They have one good game in 5, at best.
Luis Chilavert(#1) , Celso Ayala(#5)🇵🇾 vs France🇫🇷 1998 WC-RO16
- all defensive contributions vs the wc champions
- Laurent Blanc scored the first ever golden goal in WC history giving France 1-0 victory
Honestly after deep review, Just Fontaine is clearly the best player of the 1958 World Cup. It’s not just because he scored 13 goals. He was also incredible in space and chance creation. I advise everyone to rewatch footage from France’s games. Could be a top 5 campaign ever.
