Framing a return to school buildings as a “recovery” of our schools completely ignores the fact that schools pre-pandemic did not equitably serve students.
We need a revolution in education, not a recovery. #bpschat
@heidi_paterson Hi there! This is just a silly meme. We definitely make sure that we are communicating fully with our students. Their voices are extremely important. We just wanted to make a little light of the difficulties!
Brenda’s tone policing is despicable. This is not a leader. This is a condescending, adultist person reveling in their power. The students of Boston deserve better
I wasn’t going to comment on this but the more I read and analyzed it, the more disgusted I became.
@BCassellius painted me out to be the angry Black man who let his “trauma” (something she knows nothing about) lead him to be “harsh” while exhibiting no home training.(1/4)
Today I’m mad about the number of hours spent planning standardized testing vs. the number of hours spent planning joyful and meaningful celebrations for the last week of school that BOTH remote and in-person students can engage in
@MsWaterMallon By “opt in,” they really mean “if you even try to advocate for opting out, your school will be the next one to close” or something like that
I did a little research on BPS. Since I was a senior in HS ('02) the District has closed, merged, moved, or reconfigured grade spans (what I will generally call "disruption") SEVENTY PERCENT of schools! Only 30% of schools from 2002 remain in the same location and unchanged.
@jerseyjazzman@clanghoff1 100%. The lecturing about teacher self-care is infuriating because it feels like gaslighting. “If you exercised more and meditated, maybe you wouldn’t feel exploited by your job!” Yeah, no, I’m 100% exploited
The BPS narrative around summer learning is 🤢
Hot: Providing students with access to play time, outdoor experiences, and the arts
Not: Spending the summer “catching up” and implying that the only valuable learning experiences happen within school walls
@mauraotoole@SusanRField@AMachsonCarter@clanghoff1 In 20 years, we’ve had 8 superintendents (+ the associated ridiculous central office upheaval) and closed over 20 schools (rendering irreparable harm to huge numbers of kids and families and educators). No institution can thrive in this kind of instability and destruction.
Another beautiful child’s life ruthlessly stolen by racists who were then protected by violent, racist, homophobic police. But our politicians still wanna pretend that there is “no racism in the USA”
Mikayla Miller was a 16 year old Black girl from Hopkinton, MA. She was recently beaten and lynched by racist, violent, community members. We are at a total loss for words. This needs to end.
Sup should still be EMBARRASSED by what she has put her district’s teachers through without proper safety assurances. All under the guise of “collaboration”
Even as we hold the family of Adam Toledo in our thoughts in Chicago, I’m also thinking of Anthony Thompson, an unarmed teen killed by police in the bathroom of my high school @AustinEastHS Knoxville. I worry this case will get overlooked. https://t.co/HV2fsg5wRk
@MelanieFaye1 Absolutely, but not all admin are willing to do it, sadly. There’s a lot more concern about coverage than there is about student-centered scheduling
Every day, I am filled with fury about how remote students are being treated in this reopening plan. They are treated as a footnote, an inconvenience. Their needs are secondary those of in-person students.
How is “separate and unequal” somehow ok now?
