Structured Word Inquiry- an approach that allows for student investigation of words and why words are spelled a certain way, rather than word lists to be memorized. Students explore base words and affixes. Very effective for students with speech language delays and dyslexia.

Differentiated small reading groups - A critical part of weekly reading instruction to work on specific skill/ strategy instruction and overall guided reading practice. We have different books in the hands of all students every day.

Provocation Centers is an important part of our kindergarteners day at Barnsdale Road School. Our mission to motivate students through choice and learn through inquiry is apparent when students choose their center. Teachers circulate to ask thought provoking questions.

Students practice meditation skills during our MindUp program to build awareness, calmness, self-esteem, self-regulation and empathy. Studies show many benefits from building mindfulness. Our students participate in lessons about the brain and exercises to increase mindfulness.

Barnsdale Owls sing their hearts out after preparing for their spring concert for a couple of months. They gave a terrific perfomance with their kazoos and voices after learning about beats, rhythm, and tunes.

PreK staff welcomed students and families tonight at our Art Walk. For the past two months, students have been learning about different artists. We highlighted the importance of process art and the Early Childhood Standards for parents.

Barnsdale celebrates student authors! Students choose a piece to publish and hang on our Wall of Fame. Publishing is an important part of our workshop experience. So far students have published both narratives and non-fiction writing.
